Agree with everything you said.

Anybody going to see any metal shows in the future? I'm still debating on a few for this summer.
KD screwed up his back back in 06 or 07 and he's been in pretty rough shape since I guess. I think he's doing some shows this summer though (festivals in Europe or something if I heard correctly).

Only 'metal' I have planned for the summer just came up today! Dream Theater is playing in Boston on 7/17... I won't miss that.

Yeah I read that he messed up his back, I was just sorta confused because I didn't think that would stop him from recording albums, but then again I don't know the details, so I should stop assuming haha. And yeah he is playing some gigs this summer, I would love to see those, but alas nowhere near me.

Oh nice that sounds like a blast! I'm debating going to Mayhem Fest, but I would really only be going for Anthrax and especially Motorhead. But the rest of the bands are nothing I'd really like to see. Except maybe Slipknot, I mean I don't like their music much but I've heard their live show is pretty awesome. But I am planning on seeing Iron Maiden, so that'll be a blast.

Just got into Metallica's S&M big time. It sounds so new and fresh even though it's almost 15 years old. For those of you who don't know it's Metallica playing with a full orchestra. So awesome.

RIP to Jon Lord, keyboardist to one of the godfathers of metal, Deep Purple:

Probably their last great album (granted, it's live.) They're in top form and metal seems to naturally fit well with an orchestra.

It's funny because I've brought up how much I love S&M to numerous very big Metallica fans, and literally every single one has either said 'yea...it's ok' or 'meh, I don't really like it.'

Just thought it was interesting that based on my small sample, diehard fans really aren't big fans of it.

Meh, whatever. I mean, it seems then that they would feel that way towards everything Black Album and later.

In my opinion, compared to most of the stuff they put out in the 90's/00's, it's great. It's essentially a "Best Of" setlist, live. The orchestra certainly doesn't detract from the music IMO.

To me they started to get lost around the Load era. The best stuff off of Load and Re-Load would have made a decent album. Then they released their covers album, then S&M, and starting touring with people like Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park and really tried to appeal to the TRL crew IMHO. They really didn't come back around until Death Magnetic.

    That being said, I didn't mind S&M.

Wow, can't believe the news about Jon Lord. Probably the best hard rock keyboard player of all time. Certainly the most influential.

Metalheads who may have the Away From the World DVD, help me out here... what the hell is Tim playing at the beginning of DDTW? I feel like it's from an actual metal song, I just can't put my finger on it. My buddy thinks it might be Rite of Passage by Dream Theater... I'm not quite so sure that's it.

Or it could just be Tim riffing in D...

Hard to believe it's been 10 years since Darrell Abbott was killed. Guy was a fucking riff master. RIP Dime.

Anyone paying attention to Metal Allegiance?

    http://www.metalallegiance.com/

Some of the snippets they've released sound a little too polished... I'll reserve judgement until I hear the full album though. The lineup of players is insane!

No, interesting. Looks like they’ve got quite a spread. Misha Mansoor, Chris Jericho, and Phil Anselmo….All over the place.
