Ah, what the fuck, they don't play extra innings in the Spring?

My cousin closed the top of the 9th and then the broadcast just ended after they failed to score in the bottom of the inning. I was so confused.

No fucking way. Keep it a 9.

Heres an idea. If the game is tied after 9, take a hint from hockey. Visiting team sends three batters to the plate. If all three hit a home run, the home team gets a chance to tie. All three of their batters need to homer to continue on. Your basically turning the extra innings into a home run derby. The pitcher also only has 10 seconds to throw pitch. If it takes more than 10 seconds, the other team gets an automatic home run.

This used to be the rule - did away with it. Makes sense on games where everything is already planned

The perilous, probably impossible, task is figuring out how to make the game livelier and more palatable without upsetting the loyal, dedicated fans who already love the sport. I can talk to you all day about the supposed necessity of these changes, but I am a 43-year-old baseball fan who, I gotta say, loves the game exactly the way it is, who is absolutely riveted by every baseball game I watch, even if the strikeouts outnumber the hits. The evolution of the game is part of what makes it exciting — it’s why banning the shift seems so wrong — and watching teams use strategy to combat what their opponents are doing, rather than taking it away because you think it looks bad on television, is half the fun of baseball in the first place.

I like baseball. Relax, every sport has something wrong. Hell the Boy Scouts are letting in girls now. Games are too long. If you don't know that I don't know what to tell you. Yankees/Red Sox are tortuous now.

No doubt but they are too long. They are great in this way, you can watch hockey or go out and come back and the game is only in the 5th. So in that way it's not bad. On the East Coast it can be hard for people to stay up late if a game starts at 9PM EST.

Everyone knows the games are too long. Even MLB is trying to speed up the games. Same with golf. Saying the game should be sped up isn't a hot take. I would only go to 7 innings if I had to radically change a game. I'd make basketball 3 periods. Same with CBB. CBB with two halfs is crazy. In hockey I would go to a shootout in the playoffs after maybe 2 but definitely 3 overtimes. In soccer I think I would make it so a penalty in the box is either a corner kick or a penalty kick depending on severity.

Every sport has changed somewhat for popularity or tv. Where would basketball be without the 3 point line and the shoot clock?

Are you asking if I care if billionaires don’t make quite as many billions because baseball players are messing with their gloves?

I do not, no. The fact of the matter is I like baseball the way it is. I’d rather it be shorter, but not by instituting rules that fundamentally change the way the games been played my entire life. If somebody can find a way that does that I’m all ears, but ultimately I don’t care how many other people are watching.

The thing is the game hasn't been 3 hours your entire life. No sport should have games that go beyond 2 hours and 30 minutes. The games are getting longer. That IS the change.

collectively, the AL went 1207-1223 in 2018, or a 0.496 winning percentage, with 7 teams under .500

the NL went 1224-1208, .503, with 6 teams under .500. an extra 17 wins over the AL. wahoo.

yes, the NL was statistically better than the AL, but not so much better than the AL that it warrants a "the AL will be so bad" comment.

AL's record got bogged down by the O's too. And it'll be worse with how bad Detroit is too. Top teams in the AL were way better than the best in the NL.
