It's also slightly ironic since the extremely little I know about this woman is that she constantly put out videos shitting on other people.

I mentioned yesterday but her mom was a professor (or still is, I think) at UofR where I did b-school.

She would talk about her daughter if people asked, but seemed to want to keep that part of her life separate from her teaching. She was pretty good in lectures. For an extremely international finance program, she kept the attention pretty well. Guess that's where her daughter got it from.

Okay, I am going to toss in my opinions on Jenna Marbles. I have followed her channel since the beginning. I went to Suffolk University the same time as her in Boston Mass and met her before she did the youtube channel. I didn't know her that well, but I had friends that were friends with her.

Her channel was started on comedy for day-to-day life as a early 20 something year-old. It was a lot of shock value comedy that was popular at the time. Furthermore, it was also the wild west of youtube when she started. Her content was honestly tame compared to a lot of youtube at the time.

This does not excuse some of the content she put out there. It obviously didn't age well. I found her early stuff really funny when it came out, but I don't find a lot of it funny now in my 30's. That is called growing up and maturing. The interesting thing is this; Jenna's content also grew and matured. It is really easy to sit here, read the story of her cancelling her channel call her names and judge her. However, she grew a lot as a content provider and a person over the past 10 + years.

Her channel is nothing like it used to be and that is something she can be proud of. She decided to get ahead of this and privatize a lot of those older offensive videos because 1) she realized that the times we are in are about owning it and taking down old material that is unacceptable in today's world, 2) listened, learned and grew a lot as a person to understand why that content should no longer be up and was wrong to make in the first place and 3) she is not that person any more.

Anyone who has actual knowledge of her and her channel knows all of those key factors. It has been sad to see someone take ownership of her mistakes in her life and get so harshly judged and torn apart all over the internet and media. That is the exact wrong approach to progress. If people can't be given some ability to learn and become better people, there is absolutely zero point to everything we are all working for with this movement. That fact it totally lost on some people.

It is definitely important to note the above in that she is not getting "cancelled." She is taking ownership herself and acknowledging that she made mistakes with her older content. This is exactly what we should all want from people. Showing growth and taking responsibility for past actions while also showing that you can grow as a person.

I don't believe she will be gone forever, but I think she is making the right move by taking a step away to allow people who need the platform more than her right now the ability to use it. By taking this step, she added even more light to the situation.

This is a bad take but I am not surprised by it. It is the easier conclusion to take. It is important that you hold yourself to the same standards you are quick to hold others to. You judged this person harshly while simultaneously admitting you know little about her. Do you even see what is wrong with that, or how that is a double standard?

Try to remember that this is someone who is only human and unlike so many other youtubers or social media stars, she has shown tremendous growth in her maturity over the years and is willing to take responsibility for her past actions. That is a huge win that is abnormal in today's world.

Done. I never have and never will make youtube videos making fun of overweight people or asians or in blackface or etc etc etc. Pretty easy.

If she evolved, good for her. She didn't have to cancel herself, she could have made better videos that redeemed her at her core.
