Holy fuck! They did it!

Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell climbed The Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley in 1 hour 58 minutes and 7 seconds. 3000 vertical feet. Breaking the 2 hour mark is huge!

I'm assuming this isn't a free climb, correct? I don't know how race climbs go.

Speed record is cool, but I'm much much more impressed by Honnold climbing El Capitan without any ropes or safety gear. THAT is fucking insane. I get nauseous just watching clips of his doing it.

Wow, did not disappoint. We know he’s going to make it, but they did a great job of telling his story. Jimmy chin did an amazing job of the cinematography. Really cool in theatres on the big screen. Just unreal to think he free climbed 3200 feet, some places made my hands sweat just watching. His girlfriend is suuuuper pretty but I didn’t really like her. 10/10. Definitely recommend.

Valley uprising is great but haven’t seen Meru yet.

I'm all about this right now. Did "Free Solo" just come out to tv? I just heard about it Saturday and watched it that night, and then another friend said he just watched it.

I had no idea the intricacies and details that go into rock climbing. How technical it is, how much homework and planning they do, or even how tiny some of the "ledges" and features they have to climb on are. Very fascinating.

I started Dawn Wall last night too and have Valley Uprising queued up next.

Dawn Wall was fucking fantastic. Really humanized those guys, and their families.

I have to know though, how do these guys fund this shit? I get they work during the “offseason” when they’re not climbing but they just didn’t work for months at a time. Did they really save enough during their employment to pay their bills during this? Are they “sponsored” or anything? Where do they work when they’re not climbing? I wanna know more.

The National Geogaphic channel has been airing it periodically over the last few weeks. Free Solo was my favorite movie last year. Love it.

It's probably worth noting that some of the most "successful" pro climbers aren't the best climbers. They find a niche and they fill it. Sponsors are more likely to sponsor someone like Timmy O'neil, a very accomplished climber, though not the strongest, than they are someone that has very little public persona but "crushes". Dirtbag Diaries did a very good look at how to "make it" in outdoor sports and it almost never comes down to pure tallent. There are those that are extremely gifted that make it off of doing the "hardest" routes, but more often than not, those that actually make a living climbing have found a way to successfully market themselves.

Alex came off as a real douche in Free Solo imo. In his defence, he goes through a complex set of anxieties on a daily basis so what do I know.

I didn't take him as a douche, just like he has something off about him. Kinda messed up family life/childhood and an odd outlook on life.

He seems like he may be on the Autism spectrum. He reminds me a ton of my nephew who has Asperger's, and at one point in the film his mom mentions that his father had the same tendencies and something along the lines that she believes he had "what today you would call Asperger's."

he's a quirky guy for sure. and frankly, when it comes to his lady friend, at least he's up front and honest with her...and she's still with him.
