Re: The Soprano's

Then tell me why 24 isn't considered a Soap Opera then? It's a drama show as well.

Soap Operas are romantic, warm stories about every day life. Soaps are on in the afternoon daily.
The Soprano's is a compelling drama that contains violence, crude/foul language, mob activity, murder, corruption, cheating, its on cable (TV-MA rating) once a week and only for three months out of the year. The Soprano's does not have any happy endings or morals to the story, it leaves you stunned with the harsh reality of the mob/gangster life.

    Re: The Soprano's

Actually, soap operas are different from other episodic shows because of its seriality.

Here's a great description by a guy named Robert Allen, and it applies to most TV, regardless if the show is on once a week or every weekday:

"The defining quality of the soap opera form is its seriality. A serial narrative is a story told through a series of individual, narratively linked installments. Unlike episodic television programs, in which there is no narrative linkage between episodes and each episode tells a more or less self-contained story, the viewer's understanding of and pleasure in any given serial installment is predicated, to some degree, upon his or her knowledge of what has happened in previous episodes. Furthermore, each serial episode always leaves narrative loose ends for the next episode to take up. The viewer's relationship with serial characters is also different from those in episodic television. In the latter, characters cannot undergo changes that transcend any given episode, and they seldom reference events from previous episodes. Serial characters do change across episodes (they age and even die), and they possess both histories and memories. Serial television is not merely narratively segmented, its episodes are designed to be parceled out in regular installments, so that both the telling of the serial story and its reception by viewers is institutionally regulated."

There's nothing wrong with soaps, but shows like NYPD Blue, 24, and the Sopranos are most certainly soap operas. A good counterpoint show is Law & Order. Occasionally there are references to past characters and such, but each episode can stand on it's own without relying on any history.

It's a matter of genre over episode content.

Almost forgot, why would calling it a soap opera make it a bad thing? The reaction I got was kinda defensive.

What's wrong with daytime soaps? I don't care for them, but they're still on TV after thousands of episodes so they must be doing something right.

I didn't want to piss anyone off, but I feel that the Sopranos really is a soap. Just like the other dramas that fit the category.

I do understand that it's not like the ones you mentioned... ghosts and aliens.... I guess Brad Loves Dana Loves Sunny isn't exciting anymore.

    Back to the show...

What does everyone think about Tony dropping a C-bomb on Dr. Melfi in the first episode? I can't see how their relationship could continue? Was that the end to that or do you think she will talk to Tony again? I also wonder why Meadow has not been in any of the shows this season so far? Hmmm

This is exactly what I was talking about. No offense, and I won't interrupt the thread anymore, but you tell me the Sopranos isn't a soap opera and then post this?

I understand the show is popular, but please don't kid yourself about what it is.

    re: tony & dr melfi:
as you recall, tony quit seeing her "professionally" last season but he's always had the hots for her. i thought it was interesting that he's boff any number of skanks while he was married but although he thought he was "in love" with melfi, he considered her taboo until the separation from carmela. IMO, he's still looking for a mother figure to love/support him and he thinks he can get that from melfi (approval seeking, etc)

re: meadow... i was wondering that too... she kinda faded away at the end of season 4... a few shots of her @ the legal center and some phone calls.... mebbe it's cuz she's a new bride & wants some personal time?? (as if 15 months downtime wasn't enough??)

to J. >>>> ok, i admit it... it's a soap! are you happy now??

    Re: The Soprano's

I think the Dr. Melfi thing is going to come back up sometime this season. It would've been pointless to sign her on for another season if that's all she's gonna do. her name is still in the opening credits which leads me to believe there is still a story left for her somewhere. I can see only a few directions though, either she changes her mind and falls for Tony, which i thin would be the stupidest story ever. She coul make an aliance with Carmela maybe, say if Carmela starts to go see her or something, although i wouldn't see why she would at this time. Somehow someone could get to her because of Tony, i.e. threaten her, kidnap her, etc. or maybe with the AJ thing, and the inevitabe death of Junior and the marriage and everything building up, Tony could decide to start going back. Although, I don't see how it could work now.

as for Meadow, I remember hearing a soundbite on HBO's BUZZ where she said this season is more about the mob and less about the family, which i think alludes to her awareness of the small amount of screen time she's getting this season. She also has some other projects outside of the show that might have conflicted with the tapings... who knows? I think her character is kinda lost so there's not much to talk about. She obviously has been trying to make distance with herself and the family since the Jackie Jr. incident and I think the separation has been the perfect opportunity for her to start to make that break. From what we've seen so far, she's just been doing what was necessary to keep up appearances, like picking up AJ for Sunday dinner & going to her Uncle Tony's party, but i think she hasn't wanted to show an alliance to weither parent and is just doing her own thing. I don't see much for her in theis season except like Dr. Melfi, why sign her on for such a small part. maybe the thing with AJ's drug problem will get her to be around more.

    we shall see...

What did everyone think about yesterday's episode? Most of the show was spent on Tony's family and AJ. I thought that was classic how Tony sent Feech back to prison .

One of the better episodes I've seen in a long time. Of course, I'm of the opinion that there hasn't really been a great episode since season 3. Last season was generally poor, IMO, and this season, while marginally better than last thus far, still has me sick of the soap opera BS. Adrianna, etc.

The article I read about this specifically stated that it would not interfere with her contractual obligations to the remainder of this season as well as the 10 episode 6th.
