---------------

Lately I have heard different people mentioning this particular show, so I was curious and I started digging a bit.

This is how my favorite book about DMB (DMBook) narrates it:

"The Foxboro concert represents, for many reasons, a turning point in the history of the band and the first concert of the DMB in a stadium, and a myriad of guests will be for the first time on stage with the band, musicians who up at that time they had never played all together: Big Voice Jack, the Lovely Ladies, Béla Fleck and Clarence "Butch"' Taylor.
That evening, Butch - after some participations in the concerts of 1998, 1999 and most of 2000 – will become a regular guest of the DMB, making an invaluable musical contribution and participating decisively in the the evolution of the band's sound.
When Butch walks on the stage is literally terrified”.

Michael Hemphill in this article from 2003, tells more about what was going on with Butch:

“The 10 musicians had never played together as a group. Butch had no idea what tunes were on the playlist until just before show time. And outside, awaiting the band on this evening in June 1998, were 50,000 chanting, screaming fans packed into Foxboro Stadium outside Boston”.
"Just go with the flow," the others kept telling him. "Things will turn on you and all you can do is hang on and have fun!"
Butch Taylor has never set foot in a professional football stadium, except a friday night many years earlier, at Shawsville High School, when he'd take to the field at halftime with trumpet in hand to march with the band
He used to perform with a jazz band in small and smoky clubs smoky, with the audience a breath away and in an intimate atmosphere.
But this. This was the Dave Matthews Band, among the hottest groups in the world. This was a venue that held more people than all of Montgomery County, his home. This was Taylor's first stadium gig as the band's guest keyboardist. And when they finally took the stage, the eruption of cheers it’s deafening. "Hang on? Have fun? You gotta be kidding”.

It seems that this is quite an epic show. In 1998 the band is so big than VH1 makes a little special, airing live the first 3 songs: LeRoi solo (it sounds like an Heartbeat tease) » PNP » Rapunzel, Too Much (and also a bit of the prelude to Don't Drink the Water).

This is the original broadcast (music starts around min 4:00):

https://youtu.be/odICHzED3Co

There aren't so many reports of this gig, this is probably the one that better expresses the particular atmosphere of that night:

Quote:
Just listen to the crowd. Now we always hear crowds sing along to the songs but every so often we'll catch a performance where the crowd is louder than usual.
DMB is capping off thier first ever major stadium headlining gig. A solid 2 hours of old and new material, the first time Butch Taylor ever took the stage with them, Bela Fleck, Big Voice Jack, and whether ya like 'em or not, The Lovely Ladies. It was a windy and fairly warm evening that obviously got cooler as the night progressed but that didn't phaze anyone as the entire Foxboro crowd were singing at the top of their lungs. A mix up at the beginning of Rapunzel and some mic problems for Big Voice Jack didn't put one damper on the moods of over 40,000 DMB fans(and soon to be fans) and by the time the encore of Crash/Ants came, the jazzed up crowd ate up every single second. And of course the classic moment of Dave letting the crowd sing the two lines.
I really loved this show.
Fan#41

So, I would to know your stories about this show, if you were among the 46'000 lucky people who attended this historical show.

I was there. I remember Last Stop being pretty awesome. I have a cd-r of this somewhere. I might have to dig it out and check it out. I don't think the quality is great though. If I'm remembering correctly, some of this show was shown on VH-1. This would make a good live release by the band.

Imagine playing the biggest show of your life and thinking, I’m gonna wear my coziest pjs!

But seriously, this is an underrated moment in dmb history. And look at the beginning of that vh1 clip, all dates sold out. Different times in the dmb world. They were still climbing in popularity but had really started hitting their stride by 1998.

    "All dates sold out"

98 was such an awesome year. I gravitate to those shows quite often.

Also covered (in part) in this doc I found trying to unearth the performance of Back to Alexandra with Big Voice Jack (a rare, played-one-time gem) at Giants Stadium:

This was my first DMB concert (and my first concert in general). I was 11. Wish I could relive this one with a decent quality recording.

I remember this show. My 1st DMB show was at Lupo's in Providence, 1,200 people max when sold out. The idea that DMB was playing a stadium with 50,000 people... I was happy for the band and their success, but as a fan I was bummed and didn't have high hopes for what this show would be like.

But they pulled it off, and then some. And the vibe was very celebratory, and they really roared into stadiums with enough music and vibe to actually fill up the stadium. Great shows, this and the Giants Stadium one that I think came right after this?

Then to think if the following years they'd do TWO Foxboro stadium shows and THREE Giants Stadium shows... crazy!

Odd. I went to that TC link, then clicked on the "Source Info/Discussion" on the left hand column for the download link, and it brought me to the forum thread for that show. As designed. What're you seeing?

Re: 6.5.1998, Foxboro - The first true stadium show

as someone who was in the scene heavily in 98, this show was a HUGE deal. the vh1 coverage pretty much painted this concert as one of the biggest events in recent music memory regarding a band on the way up.
pretty much every DMB fan at the time, (on the aol dmb forum) was tuned into VH1 that evening.
i went to giants stadium 6/7 but i always felt this Foxboro was the better show

When the rude person you're replying to just joined, lists zero shows and acts like the whole board peed in his cornflakes this morning, you can be pretty sure it's a troll just trying to stir up trouble. Or, even if he's not trying to be a troll, he is being trollish so don't worry too much about him, karma is clearly already dishing it out to him judging from his attitude.
