2021 Gross & Attendance Figures

After the concert industry shut down last year, Billboard quit posting attendance figures, of course. My usual source on these numbers dried up. If I wanted to pay for a subscription to pollstar, I could have access to all the numbers I wanted. But ehh... I will keep looking for the other ones, but this is probably all I'm going to be able to find without becoming a hacker.

This is what I was able to find from a list of the top 300 boxscores of 2021. Anything not listed wasn't in the top 300 grossing. 2-3 night stands at any venue are just lumped in together, individual show data is not available. I do know that Deer Creek N2 was sold out, because I was there and the sign on the box office window said SOLD OUT.

Mansfield- 19,321- $1,661,277
Holmdel- 16,706- $1,326,076
Wantagh- 13,209- $1,350,575
Gilford- 14,922 - $1,366,409
Uncasville- 15,548- $1,758,738
West Palm Beach- 30,816 - $1,940,815
SPAC- 35,253- $2,186,283
Irvine- 21,714- $2,303,095
Denver- 33,473- $2,416,649
Chicago- 35,122- $2,755,959
Deer Creek- 41,094- $2,761,193
MSG- 30,981- $3,413,313
Gorge- 56,270- $4,018,162

DMB had the 4th highest attendance of 2021, with 583,399, only falling behind Harry Styles, Green Day/Weezer, and Dead & Co.

DMB had the 8th highest grossing tour of 2021, with $46 million. Average crowd size was 14,229, out of 41 reported shows (not including festival shows).

Denver outsold MSG and WPB. That's something.

MSG did a million more gross though. It's WPB underperforming compared to the other 2-night weekend stops that's the story (and the numbers for SPAC also feel low in comparison, too). Might be part to why there are rumors that the WPB run might be moved up to earlier in the tour when the weather is more hospitable.

Well actually, both MSG shows were sold out. The capacity was around 15,000, because DMB did an endstage configuration without selling seats behind the stage. If a concert utlizes the full capacity of MSG, it's about 18,000.

My guess is that for WPB, Saturday night was pretty full, and Friday night probably had a lot more room on the lawn. Most of DMB's 2 nighters are like that.

Gotcha gotcha. I was thinking MSG was much bigger.

I would bet Covid had more to do with it than weather; I think it was a little less of a destination venue this year because of that.

It would be an accurate statement that COVID cases at time of shows was significantly higher in Florida than they were anywhere else during the tour, so you might be right about that.

    Noblesville, IN- June 28-29
    38,480 / 50,452
    $2,524,104

West Palm Beach, FL. July 26-27
    27,900 / 37,228
    $2,094,916

    SPAC, July 12-13
    34,456 / 50,064
    $2,001,132

    Mansfield, MA, June 21
    17,566 / 19,900
    $1,480,094

A few comparisons I could find from 2019. These all sold a bit higher in 2021, especially WPB. 2019 I wasn't able to find figures for too many shows.

OK, that WPB comparison is just weird. How the hell do they lose $150k from 2019 to 2021 despite selling 3,000 more tickets at either identical or higher prices? There's no way the pit and the pavilion weren't sellouts, so something isn't adding up.

It never adds up to me.
Take the tour totals for example vs single shows
The average tour total ticket price is $12-15 more than the single shows average.
At least of the five or so I did, so what shows had hugely different prices overall that could move the average that much?

    MSG for sure

I'll bet there were a lot of fans seeing DMB for the first time just to get out of the house because they were jonesing to see any type of live concert. I said elsewhere in a different thread that on the Pearl Jam site, there were fans openly saying that since PJ weren't touring that there were gonna just shell out the dough and see their first DMB concert just to see any concert.

I'd be curious if there were any data for first time DMB concert goers for this past summer's tour.

Gorge: I'm one person, and held 9 tickets over 3 days. Lawns to burn for posters, double lowers to use so I wasn't squished. Curious what attendance is vs. tickets sold.

Why would you need lawns for posters?

Buy a cheap Lawn on Stubhub for $6 (did it in 2018), or if you already have an extra Lawn(s) that you can't even give away, use it to go into the venue early when gates open, buy posters/merch, go back to camp and store your posters/merch, go back to venue later with the ticket you intended to use in the first place.

Guy said he had double lowers just for himself though. If he only needs to go in and out for posters once a night, he shouldn't need the lawns.

The Oasis hand-off has been working past few Labor Daves, as well, if you have some trust-worthy friends staying there
Is there anything similar at other venues? It's 2022 - we should have this shit down on lock by now!

I know WPB was selling those 2-night lawn packages for a discounted price (can’t remember what the price was exactly). But I wonder if that has anything to do with it not making as much money.
