Like someone above stated earlier, the 6/8 or 3/4 is held throughout the jam. It's just the syncopation that's happening around it that makes it sound chaotic. This is nothing new for this band. There are plenty of instances, and recordings of those instances, when their jams evolve into basically everyone in syncopated rhythms. It really shows how talented they all are as musicians to be able to go from that, back into the original groove, effortlessly.

on topic and off topic. talking to my daughter about this album, she gets this song, but she didnt get how gaucho couldn't be considered a top song...she LOVES the gaucho. to me the answer is Snow Outside. how tight and fully the band can jam this song out is stellar.

the music in gaucho is very solid and deserved THIS treatment. instead, it got "the gimmick"...gimmickry is beneath the talent of this band. and again, Snow Outside showcases that talent as well as any song in their catalog. (not saying it's their best song, or anything so outlandish). Though i am saying i believe the song to be "big 3 worthy".

bottom line, looking at two songs that don't deserve any comparison, one song is a beast, the other song, with gimmick, could have been, instead it's gaucho.

o.O Out of curiosity, what is a song not easily skipped? For me, this, Rooftop and Broken Things are my faves off the album...one controversial view I might hold is I'd say Drunken Soldier is an easily skipped song for me :-x

Love Rooftop, for sure not skipped. I skip Belly Full. Broken Things and Belly Belly Nice are pretty sick too.

I do think Drunken Soldier is good, probably my favorite right now. But Rooftop and Broken Things are right there with it for me.

Instrumental's mystical, that's the word that keeps coming into my head when I listen. Snow Outside straightforward love song + mystical jam? Not sure, but don't care. Also my favorite song. Stellar lyrics.

I finally listened to Rooftop>Snow Outside from the 9/12 show and I can honestly say Snow Outside is a classic. If people can't see it now, they will eventually.

It's absolutely Tim playing the ascending line with fast triplet-based tremolo picking.

    Boyd?

    No.

He's in the mix but not playing what Tim is playing. His rhythmic pattern is different when he is playing and he's playing completely different notes. He is buried though so you really have to listen for it.

I'm still not convinced. I definitely hear bow-on-string noises more than plucked-string noises in that line. Also, I hear a second acoustic line buried in the song under the ascending part (separate from Daves riff). Layering and overdubs could be (and probably are) used here, but to my ears, its either Boyd, or both Boyd and Tim on that ascending part. I'll give it another listen, though.

this video is proof. start at around 4:30. Both Boyd and Tim are clearly playing that ascending line.

Ok I'm confused with the 6 count that has been discussed in this thread. I can make a 6-count on Dave's repeating guitar riff (1 starts the riff, 6 ends it) but I'm having trouble applying a 6 count to the other instruments. I can't get a count on Carter because he is like, 'Hi, I"m Carter Beauford, and I can hit a beat drum whenever the tits I want to." We say the bass player always keeps the count, but Stefan is doing crazy stuff too it seems.

Snow Outside has always reminded me of this Flecktones' tune from a few years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0lSO_s3IoE

When I listen to this song, Snow Outside just makes sense to me...easily the most Flecktones influence that I've heard from Jeff in any of his original work with DMB.
