Re: Madman’s Eyes (New Song)

Not sure what to make of this one yet... The chorus is borderline embarrassing. Just because it invokes Minarets/WYA/Last Stop doesn't automatically make it good... Gonna sit on it for a few more listens though.

I really like what Stefan is doing in this song. My favorite part is the 2nd half of the verses.

Madman's Eyes is badass; I'm so glad that this record is shaping up to be diverse musically and lyrically. For the fist time in a long time, Dave is writing dark songs again. Let's just hope that the studio version isn't ruined by Buddy's backing vocals. This song doesn't need Buddy singing a falsetto like he's Prince or Justin Timberlake in the chorus. This isn't a fucking R&B jam Buddy

I'd be willing to bet Stefan had a large part to do with putting this song together with the more proggy feel...I kept my eye on him during the song and he was totally in to it.

This. I’m not fully sold on it (yet at least).

Need to give it some more listens before giving my final opinion on it.

Agree with these. I like that he wrote a darker song, but the lyrics/chorus/flow make it sound like a 15 year old tried to emulate the other Middle Eastern-sounding DMB songs. Hopefully it'll improve between now and the studio version, because right now it's pretty rough IMO.

Edit: Just thought of a good way to describe it...it's like if Batson wanted to remake Last Stop.

Pretty solid tune. Not perfect, but interesting and a bit of a nice flashback. That’s all that we can hope for at this point. I just hope it gets jammed out more.

I think everyone pretty much nailed their statements lol. I agree with a lot of people here.

Record IMO definitely shaping up to be better than CT.

IMO AFTW was the best collection of songs and BW was still a better overall record than CT. I can really see anyone’s argument for any ordering of those 3. This one does have potential to be the best of the bunch.

AFTW is their worst album for me and I like SU as a group of live songs more than anything since BS, regardless as you said this looks like an album to look forward to

I agree that SU has some good live tunes but I think the album itself is terrible. AFTW has a bad stretch in the middle but Broken Things and Snow Outside are fantastic in my opinion. And The Riff, Rooftop, and Drunken Soldier are pretty good.

Yeah the actual album SU is terrible, I mostly just look at DMB's songwriting and how the songs are live, don't listen to the albums after about a week. When I say I'm looking forward to the album it's really just looking forward to a group of new songs to be played live, only exception is BTCS which I still listen to once per year.

Yeah that make sense. I listen to their good recordings so I’d love to have another well-produced album of good tunes. Sometimes I put together a list of songs from the last three albums (and bonus disk) that would make the best record. Something like this (not in order):

    Broken Things
    Snow Outside
    Rooftop
    The Riff
    Drunken Soldier
Lying In The Hands Of God
    Baby Blue
    Squirm
    Do You Remember
Idea Of You (although not a good recording)
    Again and Again
    Samurai Cop

I think some of you just need to accept that you’re not fans of the band anymore, because this song is pretty much exactly what you’ve said you’ve been wanting for the past 2 decades and it’s still somehow “like Batson” or “sounds like a 15 year old pretending to be old DMB.”

Odd takeaway. Seems most people really like it.

As far as Buddy goes, I doubt he will be that loud on the album version if he even is on it. May just be him singing Dave’s harmonies live.

The requisite 24-hour window of ball washing after a new song comes out is over. People can critique.

Love the sound. Lyrics in the first verse are horrible. Lyrics in the second verse are great.

    MME
Little Billy’s got a gun, Little Billy’s just havin’ fun. Shooting bottles on the wall, dreams of heroes, open war. Is this real? Is this make believe? You'd think we'd know how everything’s supposed to be. Like a train blowin’ full speed ahead, can’t hear what you’re sayin' when everybody's screamin’.

I’m afraid, can’t lie. Mama said baby don’t you cry, in the dark, be the light, don’t let go baby, hold on tight. To believe is blind, don’t sacrifice another child. It’s not black and white unless you're looking through a MadMan’s Eyes.

Oh the truth might not be crystal clear but if might is right there's no room for love in here. Oh pray to God and hope he's listening, then a man with a gun brings the demons in. We live as if our hands are tied, is it really hard to do what we know is right? To protect the things that we hold dear must we do things that we should never forgive?

I’m afraid, can’t lie. Mama said baby don’t you cry, in the dark, be the light, don’t let go baby, hold on tight. To believe is blind, don’t sacrifice another child, it’s not black and white unless you're looking through a MadMan’s Eyes.

Run and hide and don’t ask why nobody sees the look in his eyes. When it’s too late to untwist the knife, how do we face hatred with love inside us?

I’m afraid, can’t lie. Mama said baby don’t you cry, go to the dark, be the light, don’t let go, baby hold on tight. To believe is blind, don’t sacrifice another child, it’s not black and white unless you're looking through a MadMan’s Eyes.
I think that this song (at least on the surface) is about gun control, but it could be interpreted like others said to be about divides in society in general.

This is a place Dave should live more often, vocally speaking. Really in range and shows good power. Also lends itself to some catchy melody which this song absolutely has.

Can go so hard vocally when you are in a comfortable range, wish he'd belt on Seek Up like he did in Gorge '02 which I love and has no notes he has to reach for

I think there is a good chance there are strings on the studio cut.

I think the song is great. The chorus is probably my least favorite part of the song, but not bad.

    A better outro, and a jam/solo section.

Was just about to comment exactly the same, I like this song but love the fact that Dave is belting something out in range and not struggling into falsetto like he has done.
This song also feels a lot more full band than just something Dave cooked up and they are adding some layers over it, will be cool with a better outro
