Again, this is all total arm chair speculation on my part. I do not work in the field, but he certainly exhibits some signs of being on the spectrum.
I don't know if it's because he gets nervous in the spotlight, puts on an act for the general public, etc., but I had a retail job where he would come in a couple times per year and our manager wouldn't let us show at all that we knew him. He was completely normal each time; none of that weird accent he does, straight forward conversation, and a quick wit with direct eye contact. Even when I met him at the book signing and didn't act like a crazed fan but instead had a normal conversation, none of those usual performative aspects were there.

Based on my personal experience, I think it's all an act for his public persona, a place where he can put on a show.

You think he's intentionally acting the way he does when he's on stage during dave speak, etc? The way he stumbles over words during interviews? That's just as crazy to me as assuming he's on the spectrum based on seeing him speak in front of 30,000 people or during an interview.

I did preface it based on saying it was my personal experience...so no need to come at me calling my own experience crazy. But when 10/10 times I've interacted with him out of the spotlight and he's completely normal, it's the conclusion I've come to.

Just the thought I was considering crazy, not you personally. Sorry if taken the wrong way.

To me that tells a different story...that the environment is a huge influence on his personality. Just like people bite their nails when they're nervous, etc.

Despite how weird Dave seems/acts, the guy is obviously professional and has helmed a massive band/organization for 20+ years. Even though there are some not great set lists, they’re never winging it plastered on stage. At least that’s my impression.

My reaction from over here in my armchair but also informed by many conversations with him offstage is: if being on the spectrum also meant he did those things offstage, I'd guess he's either not on it at all or only on the very endge of the spectrum. Because aside from the funny voices at times (which seems more just a way to make some moments more interesting, not a tic or anything he does in the middle of a serious convo), I don't think he does those other things offstage. Also I know a LOT of people in bands with very unique, manic, sometimes possessed-looking moves & expressions onstage & that's just what they're like when they're totally feeling the music.

But again, all armchair diagnoses or anti-diagnoses (although I did also work in child welfare & K-12 education for 20+ yrs ).

This is terrible. Speculation to this degree is the stuff Fox News is made of. Please, please, please just drop this line of conversation. It is definitely not what OP was going for.

So it's better to speculate that he is going on drinking benders/blasted on stage? Got it.

They could be very careful about what pictures they post but I can't remember even seeing a beer bottle on or back stage. Maybe that wasn't always the case but all you see backstage now is Jeff Juice.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that Dave drinks hot tea on stage for his voice.

at it being OK to speculate on Dave being an alcoholic vs potentially being on the spectrum. Never change DMBc. Never change.

I know some functioning alcoholics that have more serious/intricate jobs than playing music. I myself have a booze problem and function through it. I can drink a 12 pack of beer and a pint of whiskey and you wouldn’t know that I have a buzz if you didn’t know me. Let’s not pretend that it isn’t possible to perform under the influence.

With that said, I’m not saying wether he does or doesn’t. It’s none of my business.

My son is autistic. I am a physician. Couch speculation glazes over so, so much. The original thread was discussing alcohol use.
I’m not trying to pick a fight on the internet. All I’m saying is that, there are some huge inferences being made here. I don’t pretend to walk in your shoes, but there is a major difference between what internet folk call the spectrum and clinically relevant disease. To act like they are the same is not right IMO. Obviously I have some bias. Life is hard and this whole thing probably triggered me more than it should have.

Re: Does Dave still have a drinking problem?

I don’t think he’s an alcoholic, drunk on stage, or anything like that. Also spectrum wise, who knows? If he is, he likely was never diagnosed, and if he isn’t, if you search hard enough you can assign a reason to anything more than it needs.

I’d say it’s just a reaction based on who he’s speaking to and how comfortable he is speaking to them. Probably a bit of performance anxiety and a mechanism to deal with it. Most of those weird accents and such are a character he puts on, as you can tell when he does it and then immediately reverts to a normally spoken “thanks again everybody for coming out tonight, I hope you guys have a good night.” If anything, I’d say maybe he has some ADHD and his thoughts might fly faster than his mouth can speak during interviews.

Also can’t forget he’s a musician. How many times do you think he’s working through a rhythm or lyrics in his head while doing other things? Easy to get distracted and act strangely when your mind goes elsewhere.

I’m pretty sure this is 99.9% the correct answer.

I was drunk at the last show I went to see them play. Please do not start a thread about my drinking.

Agree. The OP has a history of posts like this and trolling. But whatever.
