Re: Overall lack of setlist variety so far

it's so disappointing knowing how much potential and how unpredictable these sets can be, especially with this setup, and every three shows the same 20 songs are played. at the beginning of the tour and really up to maybe deer creek they were doing really good and putting some good sets together and aside from mostly stolen away and a few others, they were varied. maybe not super surprising sets but they had an amazing balance of old and new, radio hits and "deep tracks"(thank you andy from the office), slow and fast, etc. its frustrating to me knowing that some people are going to multiple shows and are getting many repeats and lately it seems like the same show almost.

It doesn't even matter that they brought out Lover Lay Down. 2nd time in 31 shows.

If they want to slide into every other band territory and play only a certain set with minor additions / subtractions for the whole summer, that's their call. But I think they do have an obligation to tell the fans that pay money to see multiple dates a year that if they're coming to see unpredictable sets they are going to be disappointed. This is just a waste of a tour. So much potential, no exploration.

You can also think of it as the 2nd time in 7 shows, which isn't too bad.

This brings up the idea that, at some point (although i have no idea when) they will want to keep doing tours but won't be able to, as some of the band members are writing, necessarily run through as many high energy songs in one night and continue this for the length of a tour.
This tour seems to be something like an emphasis on and a celebration of the band energy and the multiple styles they can play.
At some point in the future i think that the unpredictability of the concerts will again be quite deep. If they emphasized the unpredictability of the sets this year it would be setting the bar too high for future tours, which artists generally try to avoid.

some bands/musicians, like McCartney, literally play the exact same set every show of a tour. they are unapologetic about it and fans know it going in

the problem comes in where we hear interviews and see clips where dave and others discuss how much thought goes into making each set list, looking at recent venue histories and what was played nearby, etc...then they play the same damn thing every night

you either want to play the same 30 songs or so just about every night, OR you really think about how to vary the sets. cant sell us that bs

Those types of musicians/bands play very similar sets each night, the difference being they play songs their fans want to hear.

i think a good model/example would be springsteen or pearl jam. both play a crazy variety of songs every tour and every night is peppered with classics that anyone would know and enjoy at a show. realistically a lot of us who have been following the band for a while and have personal favorites that we want to hear at shows that are pretty different from what a ton of people at the concert want to hear.
