Re: Madman’s Eyes (New Song)

I can't believe some people think it's a good idea for Buddy to sing these seething chorus lyrics like Michael Jackson. There is a reason Buddy doesn't sing on Rhyme & Reason, Last Stop, Don't Drink the Water, etc---the rage of those songs would be diluted if Buddy was laying down some crisp Adam Levine vocals in the background. This chorus needs to be laced with venom, not "u ready 2 get down tonight gurl?" R&B falsettos.

How are the lyrics cliche? Just a general question to those who have made that criticism. I always see that reached for. Come Tomorrow is trite, Steady as we Go is pretty trite or cliche. No clue how anything in this song could be categorized as such. I'd actually say the opposite, lately Dave would have hit the subject matter on the nose much much much more than he did in this song.

i agree. some of the story telling is literal where dave of old would use metaphors, but i view much of this song as relatively nuanced. dave even says nothing is black and white.

I had no idea people looked this much into the backing vocals.

I didnt think about them once while listening to this song until i came on here for the reviews.

I’m getting some Tenacious D vibes from this tune…I can definitely hear Jack Black taking a verse

Does not compute. Dude's voice is shrill and not 'crisp' at all.

That is his point... It would work if it was crisp. Instead it is shrill and shrieking, therefore does not work. This song's chorus is laced with his shrieking backing vocals (Lol @ people saying they don't notice them) which is a huge negative.

I hear what people are saying about buddy’s vocals. To me it gives them a new twist in their music that I’m totally fine with. On the album they’ll be dialed back so you can hear Dave more anyway.

Also I hope whoever said about them surprising us and saving the jam for the album release would be great. I could actually see that being possible but won’t get my hopes up.

I mostly think this too, but then I think about the choice to have the “WOOOOO”s in the studio version of Do You Remember and have a small worry that they will do something weird that doesn’t quite gel with mixing the vocals.

One other thing I noticed that Buddy is doing on MME that I don’t think fits and don’t like are the piano slides in a few spots. I noticed this the most in the CT version. I really don’t like stuff like that (guitar slides included) where it is pretty much only done because it is physically fun for the person playing the instrument, but when you zoom out into a producer mindset you would never think “hey, I know what this part needs - a piano slide”.

Having said all of that, I like Buddy a lot and am glad he is in the band.

Buddy is the best singer in DMB ....The guy has a monster voice. I can see on some live mixes how it might not be your cup of tea. I see it being cleaned up on an album.

You love me. I 100 percent prefer Dave's voice. I wouldn't be going to my 50th show this weekend for the Buddy Strong Band ...But Buddy has a fantastic, powerful voice. There are some songs where it is too much for me. DMB doesn't mix well with the gospel sound he sometimes has IMO.

This is really great. I still think it needs to go somewhere rather than a "Half-Stop" kind of ending.

I would agree with above statements that while it’s almost awesome.. it’s missing something.. doesn’t feel complete.. I hate the verses.. “little billy”??? Wtf… come on..

    The chorus is solid though…

The over the top sentiment regarding it being the best thing since AFTW.. shows how desperate fans are for a great song.. this is not it.. Watch them
Play it 37 times next year with zero variation. Similar to the other new songs in the repertoire..

It has a metal influence as well.. System of a Down, Metallica, watered down metal

I mean, i listened to the song- i liked the song, i guess you can say that included the backing vocals.

It wasn't until i signed on here and saw people negatively dissecting the backing vocals in comparison to adam levine (awful comparison) is when i took more notice to them

...... anyways- i still like the backing vocals and i dont think they make or break the song at all.

I'm over the moon for this one (I supposed according to some people here, I'm overreacting and don't know my own thoughts). Unlike a lot of new tunes, I was drawn in and wow'd right away rather than after listening a few times. Granted I was there when it debuted. A lot of new tunes will feel a little hollow instrumentally for a while til they play them for a while, but this one hit really good, took over the room and felt very full. Same thing the next night in Grand Rapids. Both nights, the crowd had a good roar afterward. A very positive response like to something majority had never heard before is one I'd not heard for a new song in a long time.

As far as the backing vocals...I dig 'em. Especially when you know a lot of nights after the first couple weeks in a tour Dave's voice is going to struggle to get there, this'll make it still sound good.

Would be a missed opportunity if that's not what developed live over the next few years.

While we watched a couch tour stream of MS N2 or 11 year old popped in asked which song we liked better...Madman's Eyes or Walk Around the Moon. The ears on this kid, mind blowing. We all agreed we liked WAtM more, but that we really liked them both. WAtM is more unique from the band while MME is a sound somewhat unique to this band, but that they've treaded upon over the years. He really liked the creeping sound and feel, kind of haunting, of WAtM and that's one of main aspects I also dig.

So far I think we're looking at a potentially excellent album, or merely great. I'm eager to hear everything they have to offer.

lyrics are subjective of course, but imo these are fairly cliche:

    to believe is blind
    don't sacrifice another child
    it's not black and white
    unless you're looking through a madman's eyes

verses are growing on me though

The Chorus is bad. The lyrics and especially the harmonies with the awful high pitch.

The verses are great and the music in general is great. Sounds like old DMB with a bit of Dave's modern poor lyric writing.

Yeah between this song and WATM I'm really excited about the direction their songwriting is going, love both and just listened to MME again for the first time in a few days, such an awesome song. I know you don't share this opinion but for me it's my favorite dark song they've done since the early 00's, modern DMB just gets better and better.

I’ve listened about 3 times a day every day and it’s holding up and I’m hearing new cool nuances in the sound. I’m really sold on this being an A- DMB song.

Held up songs since 2013 for me:

    Broken things
    Snow outside
    Bismarck
    VITR

Few others but that’s the absolute top tier for me. Hoping we find a couple more gems in this album to add to these over the next couple years

Think the studio version will also include the sax to start the song and Dave’s wailing before the guitar riff kicks in or just kick in with the guitar riff? I’m one who hopes the live intro is part of the studio version proper just like I’m hopeful with on walk around the moon that the flute solo is included and just as lengthy studio as it is live leading into that little noodly guitar outro. Keep that stuff - it helps the songs BREATHE
