Re: Madman’s Eyes (New Song)

I listened to this song about 3 times, several days ago. And I still find it popping back into my head, even after a very busy week. It's that distinctively cool and memorable. I really need a studio cut of it.

Love this song. Best in years. I think we can all agree that they need to add a jam section / extend the song a bit live to really make this a monster. I've been trying to think of how they could best do this... What do you guys think?

    1. Extend the last chorus section with a Tim solo and horn lines to close it out?
    2. After the last chorus, go back into the post chorus section and lead into the main riff with a solo to close it out? Who takes the solo?
    3. Incorporate the quiet intro section (Dave guitar, "Hallelujah" singing, Jeff sax) after the last chorus to close it out?
    4. Don't add anything. Good as is?

This song is better than anything new the band has produced since Snow Outside.

To my ears it's Last Stop x DIDO

I would go with option 2 with a Jeff solo.

Meh. Chalk it up as yet another new DMB song that has a few interesting parts but just feels on the whole like it doesn't really go anywhere or accomplish anything.

After a few listens, can't imagine I'll ever hear again. Wouldn't subject myself to it willingly and would bathroom break at a show.

Yeah that could be cool! Although with Jeff doing the solo, we miss out on that dope baritone sax / horn section on the verse. So maybe Tim goes nuts here.

I think he could still pull it off. He plays the alto in the intro with the baritone still strapped on.

Took a stab at tabbing this out, it's not perfect (Post-Chorus is hard to track his fingers w/the videos I've seen) but it's reasonably close:

    Code:
    Intro
    E|-------------|-------------|-------------------------|
    B|-------------|-------------|-------------------------|
    G|-------------|-------------|-------------------------|
    D|--7----------|--7----------|--7-------6-7-6----------|

DMB then delivered “So Much To Say” and segued into “Too Much” via “Anyone Seen The Bridge” which featured an “Also Sprach Zarathustra” tease. The band closed out the set with “You Might Die Trying.” Dave Matthews Band returned to the stage to begin the encore with “The Space Between” followed by “Don’t Drink The Water” to close out the evening.

Just my opinion but this song is just awful and a complete mess of a song. I do very much enjoy the key they play in for the majority of the song but the chorus just absolutely ruins it for me. So disorganized, bland, and forced.

But seriously, I don’t understand the positive reception. For me, this is right up there with Can’t Stop and Dreamgirl as one of the the bigger dumpster fires in the portfolio.

I’m gonna say some crazy shit…. I think Madman’s Eyes is one of the best songs they’ve written since Squirm. I’m like weirdly surprised at how much I like this song lol. What’s even wilder is at alpine this year a bunch of my friends, some of which never seen DMB live and aren’t really big fans, were blown away by that tune. Kinda wish it opened the show as originally intended per the handwritten setlist.

I wouldn't say it's Can't Stop-level bad, but I do think it comes off as a lesser version of Minarets/The Last Stop with a bad chorus and an absolutely senseless vocal melody. I can appreciate parts of the instrumental and some of the writing, but the whole package just doesn't work for me

I'll wait until I hear the studio cut to give a fair shake for this song but I can't stand it. The music is kinda cool, but the lyrics and chorus are abysmal.

Everyone's got their own tastes, but it seems pretty clear that MME is one of their best received new songs in a while, from both serious and casual fans. I definitely enjoy it quite a bit, and even more so with the tweaks they made this year.

This song crushes lately. I still think the vocal melody is kind of…lazy. But damn it’s a fun one live

For sure, what was the last song that got so much praise from here? Bismarck? It's good to see. I personally prefer Walk Around the Moon, but I'm glad so many people are into MME.

Bismarck is close, but I feel like MME has been getting more praise than that, even. I'd love for Bismarck to come back, though.
