Re: Is Big Whiskey getting worse to anyone else?

Not even a little bit! Part of the reason I keep adding shows is the performances of the big whiskey songs on this tour! Bethel was BWGK heavy with 10 songs and I had a freaking fantastic time! Seeing the songs live makes me appreciate the cd even more so if anything BWGK is actually getting BETTER to me! Love that CD.

I think the new is wearing off as is the excitement, causing the album to seem worse.

I think "worse" is the wrong word to use here because it sounds like your saying it is moving towards becoming a terrible album. How about saying although the quality of the album is still there, the excitement of the album is lessening. It is still a huge improvement on previous albums and you can tell the band gave an extra level of detail and professionalism while making it, yet the novelty of Grux is waning.

But with that said, I am still finding new things to love and enjoy about the disc. I would venture to say that it belongs with the big three. Is it perfect? No, but what is?

i think we are sorta in a transition period for our opinion on the album, being that its not new anymore, but we dont know how the staying power will last. I def was one of the ones that had this album on non stop repeat since the leak till about 2 weeks after the release. since then ive migrated back to a normal rotation (which for me right now includes taylor swift, kellie picker, paramore, cobra starship, and o.a.r.) as well as more live dmb stuff again. so BW is getting a lot less play for me now. however i still think its a great album, and feel that 2 songs from the album in Time Bomb and Shake Me could crack my top 15 dmb songs ever.

During one of the BW interviews Dave mentions when they play music its a celebration and I absolutely agree with that, so the fact that most of Big Whiskey is harder and darker than most of their other stuff causes me to play other songs more.

Maybe I'm way off, but thats just how I'm feeling lately. It seems like the other tunes (Big 3 + LW/BS) just have a real effortless flow to them, like all the instruments are "celebrating" while Big Whiskey has a much harder edge. Again, not saying Big Whiskeys bad, I love it, but lately I've played it less and less. Maybe its just summer time.
it is a rather dark album...but you also have to consider that of the Big 3 , BTCS is close to if not just as dark as BW.... but it is still celebrated and considered by alot of people including myself as their best album to date

Big Whiskey was not some flash in the pan good album b/c we all wanted it to be. It's pretty damn good. Even now songs that i wasn't so fond of are growing on me big time. Plus the fact that every song has translated well live (cept baby blue, that may be a D&T song). Seven was the one song that we had heard early that I was worried about, but boy is that song amazing. Great album. Big 3? Time will tell, right now no, but songs (like Dive In) are already beginning to be tweaked for the better.

I know what the OP is getting at. I completely forget the album exists most days. I did put it on today and was more receptive to the last 2 tracks on the record than I was before though.

Still really love this album. Stays in the cd player and listen to songs from it at least once a day. The only thing that gets me and Im sure this has been discussed before but the lack of jams on the cd. Ive also been listening to all the old albums (pretty much the big 3) and noticed so much more instrumental jams during songs like #41, lie in our graves, last stop, spoon, etc.

The reason why there is a big 3 is because of the epic songs on the album. BW to me doesn't have any of these epic songs. Like i said I love the album but just wish there were a few of the songs with a jam break.

I agree. Nothing on Spaceman, very little on Squirm, You and Me, etc. I am surprised at the lack of horns, considering there were two players during these sessions. Maybe they're there, and they were just mixed back, but I find that it takes away that differentiating quality.

This is particularly annoying. We hear Boyd on his own in what, two songs? Otherwise, it's just background stuff. I am not overly impressed with the string arrangements either, with the orchestral stuff on Baby Blue and Dive In.

I think I'll be listening to Shake Me, Why I Am, Hands of God, Squirm, Alligator Pie, Seven and Baby Blue for a pretty good while.

I don't think there's a song on here that I would call truly "bad." I'd say You and Me is closest but it has some life to it, which the truly terrible songs on something like Stand Up completely lacked.

It's a good album, I'll still listen on occasion. But I haven't been wearing the disc out since June 2 like I a lot of you so it's not old and tired for me yet.

still in very heavy rotation - just listened again today. i love love love this album. carter's work on it blows my mind every time i listen. and what's great to me is that outside of 1 or 2 tracks, opinions are very divergent compared to past work. i think that's the sign of a band taking chances and achieving their goal.

I'll agree with this. I've been listening to a LOT of BW as well as older/live trax, and the band's sound has definitely morphed, but it's still the same band. It's a little "darker", which seems to work really well, and it still plays well at a party.

Most of my friends aren't too into DMB, so it is always hard for me to choose what songs to play at a party. I did have a Beacon Theater night party - but I was the only one really paying attention. At my last party (2 weeks ago), the only songs from BWGGK that I played were FTWII, Alligator Pie and Why I Am. Which others do you think are crowd pleasers?

Usually, I just put the whole album on and let it play. I have some friends who hate anything that's commercial, but they can deal with it. My buddy was up for the weekend last week, and he asked me what was playing - he went to Best Buy and bought the album the very next day, so he could listen to it on his drive home.

for the most part, though - my friends and I all sit around a fire with DMB or Ben Folds playing on some outdoor speakers, and it makes for a good time. Then again, those are my friends that are DMB fans, which I tend to hang out with more often than not. (purely coincidental, I don't just pick friends based on music, but it helps..)

As far as specific crowd pleasers? Seven gets a jam going, Monkey, Funny and even You and Me. I had someone comment that they thought Y&M should have been at the end of the movie Wall-E. My friends are going to play that song as they exit their wedding reception.

I'm still digging it.. but after attending Bristow this past weekend, I'm not sure these songs are as good live as the studio. I think Dave's voice was off, but DMB may have achieved an album that's better in studio. These songs will grow, but so far LIHOG is the only song that's really gotten bigger live.. so that song, and WIA are good live... the rest just don't sound as good as on the album. Maybe getting some official release from 09 will change that.
