2004 was the last greatest year of this band

Yeah, I said it. The last time this band was on fire was 2004!

Man I miss that band.

I agree, but there was also something magical about June 2008

2004 was the last time Dave wrote REALLY compelling music. But also I agree with the other poster that June 2008 was fire. It's sad to think about what could have been

I’d argue that they sounded better live in 2005 BUT… lots of Stand Up songs.

true. 2008 is right behind 2004, but 2008 had Tim and their sound had changed again.

The Woodlands in TX was sold out for a 2 nighter in 2004 and that would never happen again.

2004 was magical. New songs on fire. Band locked in sync.

Yeah I agree. I've read on here 2008 but that June is such a small sample size it's hard to compare. There were some great versions of songs played in the early part of the tour. There were also alot of covers played too, so I'd agree with the 04 sentiment.
It's amazing when you think how long ago that was. Some Devil came out a year earlier and is still better than anything released after it.

I'll always have regret for not catching a show in 2004.

I mean, Live Trax 43. Holy shit. That kind of performance on a TUESDAY in July. Amazing. And they played the night before.

Yeah but us 2008’ers aren’t saying they sounded better than 04 just that that was the last year they sounded great.

Disagree about "the last greatest year"

But I do put 2004 in my top years of the band. 2004 and 1995 are probably my favorites.

While the 2004 songs were good, they were played all every night and that takes the tour down a notch for me. They sounded amazing in 2005 but there's Stand Up stinking up sets. 2008 was probably the last, truly great year of the band.

I agree with 2005. Mostly. I like the Stand Up songs live. The band did sound amazing. I very much consider that a great tour.

I can't think of anything too special about 2008. 2006 and 2007 were much better.

    2016 was great.

    2021 was amazing.

There's been some good to great tours since, and some seriously great performances, but in my opinion I'd agree that 2004 was the last year the original "spirit" of DMB really shone bright. The band still sounded great in 05 and 06, but something changed. June 2008 was cool, but felt like they were just getting warmed up by the end of it. Had Roi not had his accident I think 2008 would have led to a stellar summer and album the following year, but while June had great performances, it felt like they were finding their footing with bringing Tim back in, and Leroi's resurgence in playing. It was a flash of hope that died with Roi.

2008 felt like the magic was back, it was missing in 2006 and 2007. Even with Roi's accident, they still felt like they were back. Then we lost Roi and nothing has been the same.

    2016 was nice.

    Literally nothing amazing about 2021.

I agree with all of this. 2004 we saw Dave still writing creative tunes and they were Road testing songs again the way they used to so I don’t mind them playing those new songs every night. They were good! While the band has sounded good off and on since they were never the same after 2004.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure the years after 04 were rough internally for the band and on the verge of breaking up. Roi had lost interest of the path of the band. Come 08 and Roi had a new outlook and the band seemed to be truly happy. Yes that tour was good but not like 04. And yes the band sounds great musically now but let’s face it. Dave isn’t writing jams or great tunes. But they sure are playing them instruments well.

I think Everyday holds the crown as "The Beginning of The End."

Stand Up has the dubious honor of being "The Ending of The Beginning of The End."

If you're still on a fan forum 18 years after the "last greatest year of this band" perhaps there is something still there to behold.

But every single show they were guaranteed to play the 04 songs they were working on. I think only 1 or 2 shows didn't have all those songs.

Re: 2004 was the last greatest year of this band

I think 2008 was a stellar year pre and post Roi. Honestly when we thought Jeff Coffin was going to be a temporary solution, I thought he brought so much fun and energy to the sets. Having him and Tim Reynolds on one stage was wild. Just a completely different sound from 06/07 when things were dragging a bit.

I honestly thought when I saw the band in 07 they were done. I even saw them at the Gorge that year. And while the shows were good, it just wasn't the same as years prior.

I think the last decade has been fine! Still see them multiple times a year. I don't think any act really compares to the show DMB puts on. While post Boyd has been way different, I'm impressed with what they do on stage still. I think the sets certainly need a breath of fresh air after the fall tour this year, but 2021 and 2022 were great shows the 4 I saw. No complaints other than Dave's voice being tired, but it was like that when I saw them in 2000 too.

Just saw Pearl Jam for the first time which everyone says DESTROYS DMB as a live act, they were awesome, but everything sounds loud/muffled and more or less the same for 30 songs. Every song is like 4 minutes too.
