Re: Madman’s Eyes (New Song)

Excellent riffage, dig the song structure, don’t love the vocals and lyrics but overall I think I like it.

Yeah, the biggest thing I like about this song vocally is that he isn't purposely scooping and sliding into notes, I prefer being right on the note and being accurate. What he does at the beginning of WATM is intentional but I find it a bit distracting and unnecessary, love WATM though.

I really enjoyed it live. I picture some kind of movie seen in slow motion where the hero and villain are going at it and this is being played behind it. Wild.

Dave's vocal inflection during the "is this real, is this make believe" and "like a train blowing full speed ahead" is as good as he's ever done.

The chorus needs work, the backup vocals need to vanish (and maybe thats a product of the recording)

The riff is great, and the middle eastern sound is DMB.

The melody of the chorus of this and WATM are very similar.

I'm afraid, can't lie, mama said baby don't you cry

It was blue, it was red, found a new door inside of my head

Maybe I’m in the minority here. I like the backup vocals on the chorus. Gives the band a fresh feel this album so far.

What I want is a Seek Up esque intro with that riff being repeated and Jeff getting in some soprano solo action.

Reminds me a lot of some of jeff coffins tunes on “dream shanti” which makes me think he had something to do with the musical aspect of it.

Been giving this quite a few listens after hearing it on the Sirius stream Friday night. Still a big fan of this track, we've all been wanting them to head back in this direction so I'm thrilled they're doing it here. I think I still slightly prefer WATM, but there's definitely potential for MME to be the superior track. WATM is pretty well fleshed out as a live song at this point where MME could still improve, especially if they let Jeff cook on the outro instead of the somewhat hard stop. I don't love the lyrics in the first verse, but that's a minor gripe. Great track overall, excited to hear it grow and eventually hear the studio track, hopefully with strings!

The cadence of the chorus is cool, but the chorus lyrics are still kinda late-career Dave, which is to say, pretty meh

    Re: Madman’s Eyes (New Song)

My favorite part is the breakdown between verse and chorus not sure what it would be called may just be the second half of each verse. Music sounds really good and can hear space for some real dark strings behind it.

    It’s each of these:
Is this real? Is this make believe? You'd think we'd know how everything’s supposed to be. Like a train blowin’ full speed ahead, can’t hear what you’re sayin' when everybody's screamin’.

We live as if our hands are tied, is it really hard to do what we know is right? To protect the things that we hold dear must we do things that we should never forgive?

Run and hide and don’t ask why nobody sees the look in his eyes. When it’s too late to untwist the knife, how do we face hatred with love inside us?

Felt like a slower build up into the first verse, also seemed like a bit of a mistake at the end Carter kept playing a bit.

been a long time since the entire board loved a new song. I only wish we had some live strings, I assume if this hits an album we will but will be a whole orchestra.

I think Bismarck was the last song that got this type of consensus initially.

For me I think it just feels too "empty" on the staccato, riffing portions. Strings there would fill the Boyd gap on this one. Last Stop and Minarets have a driving motion to them where this one is more stop and go; it's missing the groove those other songs sink into, for lack of a better description.

If somehow Bismarck could make this album whoooo boy MME, WATM and B would be the best three songs on an album alone since Busted Stuff.

Broken Things, Snow Outside and a combo of BBN/Riff/Rooftop/DS would be the trio it would be passing IMO.

I think that this song (at least on the surface) is about gun control, but it could be interpreted like others said to be about divides in society in general.
It's similar in overarching intended theme to Come Tomorrow just much much better execution.
