honestly, sweets lyrics resonate much more with me than those. lyrics do not have to be deep to be better. "In My Life" is one of the greatest songs ever written, buts its simple lyrically and it blows the dreaming tree out of the water.

i'm not here to change your mind about the song. i just think your ability to judge a song is extremely poor. convoluted and complex does not equal better. i love what sweet is about and i believe the way that it is conveyed through a metaphor about teaching his son to swim is one of the more beautiful things dave has written, especially at this point in his life. the growth from what he was writing about a decade in a half ago to now makes it that much more powerful. growth. thats why the beatles (not comparing dmb to the beatles areso great), comparing Meet the Beatles, to Revolver to Sgt. Peppers to Abbey Road is incredible. That's what makes Sweet stand out so much to me, the growth of the lyrical content.

theres no problem with not liking those songs. I think Too Much is garbage. Im just having a conversation about why he thinks the lyrics suck, thats all. anyone can like what they want. the worst part of this site is people giving people shit about how its not possible to dislike songs.

Not everyone is going to like every single song. I think Old Dirt Hill is incredible, I like it more than Seek Up. That doesnt make me less of a fan or a diehard fan. Just have different taste. Old Dirt Hill strikes a chord that Seek Up doesnt, thats all.

I think the metaphors are cliche, boring, and most importantly non-applicable to me. Not every song has to be relate-able either; it's just one more area that the song fails. There is nothing even remotely impressive about the music or the lyrics. There is absolutely nothing attention grabbing or interesting in the entire song. Zero redeeming value. But I guess for some people "omg ukelele" is enough for them. You & Me is Dave's current life, and it's crapped on all over this site. Should've added some uke.

Not that the ukelele is all you need, but you know what I'm saying.

That's literally 4 cliche lines used in one chorus (an awesome chorus at that). Point is: the lyrics serve the purpose of the song, sometimes cliches do that. Sweet actually avoids less literal cliches than Rapunzel (shocking Rapunzel is a better song as well). Both have simple messages which are conveyed wonderfully in their lyrics, cliche or not. Sweet is actually an allegory as it's only one metaphor...not metaphors. If Sweet's symbolism doesn't relate with you fine...but that doesn't make it bad by any stretch. Bad lyrics are Steady as We Go...not Sweet. Using a pool to symbolize being "way too deep in something" is understandable, and it works within the framework of this song. Simple song (clearly the purpose as it barely changes until the band comes in), and the simple allegory serves the purpose of the song.


None of that even mentions the gorgeous melody Dave wrote.

Oh and I should also mention, it's my least favorite of the new tunes as of yesterday, and I'm no dmb ballwasher.

I don't disagree with this at all. If you don't feel it, you don't feel it. Sometimes cliche even helps if it's completely relateable, because to me, we all feel "cliches." So I guess it turns out asking a simple question leads to better discussion than getting defensive...dually noted.

Comparing every song to Warehouse is only going to leave your bitterly disappointed. Sweet is not on the same level as Warehouse, but it's also not meant to be. It is a meaningless comparison, because the songs are too different, musically and lyrically, to be able to seriously judge one and the other.

Its why the Golden Globes and the Emmys don't lump Comedy and Drama together. Any direct comparison is inherently biased in one sides favor (think of how many comedies and comedic performances have won at the oscars, which does not make a distinction.)

It's not a case of lowered standards, It's a case of different opinions. And stop assuming that your own opinion is the only correct one (you don't overtly say this but it can be implied from the tone of your post). This is music, there is no correct answer.

You don't have to like Sweet, or any of the new music for that matter, but don't think that your opinion is the only right one, or that the song is objectively Shitty (b/c that cannot be proven one way or another...again, its music)
