My ‘Come Tomorrow’ Review:
I know a lot of people don’t want to hear this, but you can see how Dave’s priorities when writing music have changed drastically and I believe after this album we are going to see more solo work from Dave like ‘When I’m Weary’ and ‘Virginia in the Rain’, which I’m pumped for him. You can tell he is tired of writing music for a band that is not the same as it was from 1992-2000 (no Boyd, no Roi), he wants to go solo. That being said, it’s just strange with no Boyd on album, and to go further why is Jeff Coffins array of woodwinds not integrated more?? There are no standout sax solos or outros, I feel like that’s what makes the DMB sound soo badass, a mix of rock and jazz. That’s the disconnect from the DMB sound we all love and want, and instead they fill background with lame orchestra movements. The song complexity we hear in all the tracks on Before These Crowded Streets is missing because sounds like we only have Carter and Dave running the show in the studio for this album. Need more salt man. But through the fog I think we have some good tracks on this album:
1. ‘Samurai Cop’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️)3/5
- great build up through song
- good solo from Timmy
- love lyrics and melody
- need more volume on sax and horn
2. ‘Can’t Stop’ (⭐️)1/5
- again need more activity on sax
- Could be more funky
- lyrics & melody are ok
- don’t like vocal effects at chorus
- will be good live version
3. ‘Here on Out’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️) 3/5
- don’t like orchestra, would prefer woodwind background fill, with keys
- would like some bongo from Carter
- too produced, would like it to have campfire feel
- I know this song with grow on me
4. ‘That Girl Is You’ (⭐️) 1/5
- love the intro, wish it segued into a different faster paced melody to make song more complex.
- like the vocals from Dave, good textures and range
- again, needs sax and horns on second half of song, kept waiting for the song to take me away on alternate melody.
5. ‘She’ (⭐️⭐️) 2/5
- sounds like mid nighties alt rock
- song has more complexity than other tracks on album
- Stefan shines through on this track
- Timmy has potential for great wa-wa solo live on this track
6. ‘Idea of You’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) 4/5
- best overall Carter rhythm on album
- studio cut is clean
- love the lyrics & melody on this track
- sounds most like old DMB sound
- great horn and sax influence
- song has good complexity
7. ‘Virginia in the Rain’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️) 3/5
- love the effect on keys
- studio cut is great
- good lyrics and melody
- again would like more sax
8. ‘Again and Again’ (⭐️⭐️) 2/5
- Stefan shines through again here
- not fan of orchestra again
- where is Jeff Coffin!???
- lyrics and melody are ok
- this is a track I think will be a different live version that will grow on me
9. ‘Bkdkdkdd’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️) 3/5
- love this snippet, hope they elaborate in live shows.
- this has true DMB DNA
10. ‘Black and Blue Bird’ (⭐️⭐️) 2/5
- studio version is clean
- good sax influence
- Carter shines through
- good complexity, but a tad too bright
11. ‘Come On Come On’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) 4/5
- heavy melody that carries track
- good complexity
- I think this will be great live
- this is a roll down the windows while driving on highway song
- don’t like orchestra, use Jeff & Rashawn instead with Jeff outro
- lyrics and melody great
12. ‘Do You Remember’ (⭐️⭐️) 2/5
- lyrics and melody are decent
- upbeat song that could jam more
- good guitar riff, but get horns more involved
-love Timmy’s classical guitar solo
- would like to hear Carter on bongos
13. ‘Come Tomorrow’ (⭐️) 1/5
- lyrics and melody are ok
- too structured
- wish they jammed second half of the song, Carter could really build it up
- get rid of orchestra damnit, ruins it
- turn up the horns
- I dig the female vocals
14. ‘When I’m Weary’ (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) 4/5
- beautiful melody
- new sound, new chapter for Dave, think we will see more of this from him in the future.
- I could see a whole solo album from him with melodies like this.
