it's only $30 to have your taxes done by HR Block?

Is there some restriction on that? Seems low..

please, don't go to H&R Block.

find a small accountant, or a tax preparer... H&R Block make the same crappy amount no matter what you get back, whereas a tax preparer has taken classes to maximize your savings legally, and gets business from word of mouth, like when you get $3100 back, you tell your friends, and they go to that person.

Don't do that. It's not a good idea.

Your best idea is to take the extra money that would go toward the extra two half-payments and invest it.

Chances are you'll get a better return on the money than the interest rate on your mortgage.

I have this rock in my backyard, its one of the fastest rocks to exist. The other day, it almost started moving.

Its pretty bad when a program that is definitely on track to fail in our lifetime is considered one of the best government programs. But I guess you are right, most other things the government gets involved in fail from the beginning, so comparatively SS is doing pretty good.

Great plan. I believe you've just increased the effective tax rate on the average middle class family to about 80%. Well done.

I agree. The people I have dealt with at H&R were not very bring. If you own a business, go to an accountant. If not, use Turbo Tax or H&R online.

I guess I have to do my taxes this week...

    HR Block varies.... greatly.

About 3 years ago when I filed it was 30 dollars. Last year it was something around 80, and that was with a coupon.

I'm not sure how they charge, by the amount of forms or something like that. All I know is I got 4 this year, so I'm probably going to be mad when I leave.

I figure I'll get the ballpark 700 back again. I usually get it no lube on my paychecks, with them taking roughly a quarter of my check. When I worked for 13 an hour, they took about 125 a week (out of 520). Now, at 15 an hour, they take about 140 a week.

And a question. How long does it take to get money if you file electronically?

I don't believe so. I've read the plan numerous times and I really like how things are broken. I am inherently opposed to a progressive tax system.

Tax me on what I spend...not what I earn.

If you factor in (out, actually) all the built-in taxes on goods/services, the actual dollar amount required to purchase goods/services would decrease. You'd also eliminate all the myriad of deductions, exemptions, etc and dramatically simplify our ridiculously cumbersome tax system.

That's just me though. I am almost ALWAYS on the side of less government, etc. I was opposed to Bush's bailout and I am opposed to Obama's coming "stimulus" plan. Let the market work itself out. I blame the government, irresponsible lenders (who were encouraged by the government to make bad loans thanks to the backing of Fannie/Freddie on horrible loans) and borrowers/home "owners" who bit off more than they could chew. Sure, a few of the sob stories about being tricked, deceived, lied to are true, but most of the time, people just wanted more than what they could afford.

What in the world is the government doing backing mortgages in the first place? Should there have been more regulation? I don't know. I do strongly believe that government policies to promote homeownership helped contribute to the collapse.

Government needs to get out of the way, let the chips fall where they may and allow the American PEOPLE and the American ECONOMY to work out the problems. Homes were WAY overpriced the last several years. They are adjusting. I don't want the government artificially propping them up. In fact, I wish Congress would just go on recess for the year. The less Congress can do, the better. That is why I always prefer a President of one party and a Congress of another. Gridlock is good, as far as I'm concerned. Let them be deadlocked all the time. I don't WANT them to be able to get much of anything done. The less they aer able to accomplish (word used very loosely), the better off the nation will be in the long run.

Oh well.... my thoughts on the whole thing...

True, my advisor gave me the same advice. Also, I 100% agree about getting tax accountant to do your taxes. We pay one about $175 to do both federal and state and I guarantee it more than pays for itself.

It helps to be a single guy with only one deduction for student interest, I have no reason to pay someone else to do it.

Actually, the majority of your tax dollar goes into either national defense, healthcare, social security, or the servicing of our national debt.
