I thought I would get back more than $800. I am a Democrat, but damn in someways I am a Republican.

The question should be: why is it okay for the government to distribute
welfare to the unwilling and unmotivated to work and also say it's okay
to take money from the first-generation wealthy (whom are amongst some
of the brightest and most innovative people in America) and distribute
it to those same unwilling people and those who don't work as hard as
    the wealthy?

Why should I give my hard earned money to people who haven't earned it?
why can't I choose what to do with my money? Everybody in this country
has a choice, you can choose to get an education, you can choose to
stay home and make a 4 babies, if you choose not to work you should not
get rewarded for it. Sometimes I hate this time of year...

I am not being mean or inconsiderate in anyway. I feel that some people need help and I am all for that. But, when you go to Kroger with your food stamps and you are able to work, how is that fair that I have college loan debt, or when I go to Kroger to buy groceries I have to fork out $50, while other people buy $200 worth of groceries for free??? and then they get $4,000 back in taxes.

Actually, the majority of your tax dollar goes into either national defense, healthcare, social security, or the servicing of our national debt.

Anyone who thinks privatizing SS is a good idea is a dumbass. Supplemental programs, sure, go at it.

It's one of the most efficiently run government program to exist. It would be extremely more costly to privatize it.

yeah its great getting that refund, but isnt that your money in the first place?? two of the biggest things you can do that save/make money on your own money is calculate a 0 tax refund and pay a bi-weekly mortgage instead of monthly...theres no reason to give the govt your money interest free

You just get it, as far as I can tell (I was just investigating education tax credits). It kind of rocks.

The worst return I ever got was the one where I had H&R Block do my taxes. I knew more than the guy preparing my return.

Since then I have done them on my own until the past few years when I switched to Turbo Tax. Turbo Tax is simple and very user friendly. It asks you specific questions and all you do is put in the numbers. And you can file electronicaly.

My dad does mine, just because he's been doing our entire family's for years and is more familiar with the program, but in watching him, I've seen how user-friendly it is. It really is a great program.

I did both of my filings on the forms they sent out in the little booklets and mailed them in. Old fashioned way, ftw.

Edit: My state forms were processed already 2 days after I sent them in, got the money about 5 days after that.

Re: I just did my taxes

I'm all for the flat tax and for privatizing Social Security. The flat tax would stop penalizing people for success. There'd be the basic "cost of living" for necessities, etc that everyone would get. No taxes on savings or investments. Stop the business taxes. There's no such thing anyways. Businesses don't pay taxes -- emplyees, employers and CUSTOMERS pay them. They are just passed down.

As for Social Security: That system is a joke and is no different than what Madoff did, except we'll send Madoff to jail and we'll keep re-electing the people who run Social Security. Let me manage my own retirement, thank you very much... I don't need Big Daddy Government trying to handle it for me just because some people are unable or uninterested in taking care of things for themselves. I am 29 years old now. If I could get out of SS, I'd let the government KEEP every penny that has already been confiscated from me toward this system. They can KEEP it. Just let me manage things for myself going forward.

Also, I don't think taxes should be withheld. I think people should get their FULL checks every week/month/whatever... Then, we'd have to write a CHECK to the various governments (state, local, federal) every week or month. Then people would realize HOW MUCH they actually pay. There would be a revolt against our current tax policy if people actually had to WRITE THE CHECKS to the government.

That's my two cents (well, my one cent after taxes)...
