iHeartRadio - INSIDE THE STUDIO - Interview

https://art19.com/shows/inside-the-s...3-27eb458bdbbd

Haven't seen this posted anywhere yet. He addressed the Boyd elephant in the room (not the #SkreeToo stuff, but the stuff leading up to it).

    Summary here, including Boyd stuff:

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/steveba.../#3030013b1936

    Quote:
On Tinsley Leaving And Buddy Strong Joining:

I think from the beginning we've been open to improvisation, to letting things go, but everything changes. I'd been struggling a bit with the band, with the sound of the band, or where we'd been going, and I think that's what led to Boyd stepping away. I think that bringing in Buddy Strong, there's this new ingredient that has changed all of us. And everyone changes. It's like, we're all looking at each other, thinking a whole different way.

    MORE FROM FORBES
    On Tinsley’s Departure:

There's been apprehension for a long time. I know the guys agree that Boyd certainly was a big part of the early part of the band, and it's remained because he's been there from the beginning, his powerful personality. He was there on stage, but, in rehearsals or in the studio his focus was really, it felt like to us, not in the room. And so, he was his own whirling dervish or his own storm, but that really worked beautifully sometimes. Other times it was very disoriented or seemed disconnected, and it was a frustration, and there was a lot of confrontation. But I'm a fiercely loyal person, and it took a long time for me to say, "Look, we need more from you. We need more focus on us." In that time when we're meant to be focusing on what we're doing, I've been having a really frustrating time getting to feel like he was putting in anything more than the bare minimum, and to get him to cop to that. That frustration, in combination with his own personal things led him to follow my advice and go to look after himself.

I honestly thought we would never hear anything even approaching this level of candor from dave re: the boyd situation.

So it was a combination of wanting a change of sound, and poor work ethic from Boyd. That’s why they didn’t replace him with another violinist.

Shame he doesn't realize that getting an accomplished violinist like AM Calhoun or Casey Driessen WOULD be a massive change in sound from root position hoedowning, and certainly from all anecdotes a massive change in work ethic also.

It may not be a change in sound from the violin, but just Boyd’s half-assed playing over the last number of years. There are quite a few signature “Boyd” moments within songs. When the rest of the band doesn’t even know what they are going to get that night, it’s no surprise that it happened really.

I think it will take some time to get used to a new sound for the band (no violin and bring the keys back in). They are making strides this tour already. Playing more and more with Buddy will get them there.

so sounds like he asked Boyd to step away for pure musical (and mental) reasons before #SkreeToo -- i think most of us here figured they were related and DMB Inc. was covering it up. which still may be true, but the timeline now makes a little more sense.

Yeah, coincidences do happen. I suppose it is possible Dave told Boyd to step away before knowing about all the S2 stuff after all.

Wow his comments on Boyd are wayyyy more in depth than I'd ever have imagined.

He's talking about how Boyd wasn't really there in rehearsals and studio time, and says "It was a frustration, and we came--there was a lot of confrontation. But I'm a fiercely loyal person, and it took a long time for me to say 'Look. We need more from you. We need more focus on us. It just felt like it's been a while that in that time when we're meant to be focusing on what we're doing, I've been having a really frustrating time getting to feel like he was putting in anything more than the bare minimum. And to get him to cop to that. That frustration--in combination with his own personal things--led him to follow my advice and go to, to look after himself."

    Wow.

Edit: Didn't see that it's already quoted above. But still, damn.

    and here comes NPR:
    https://www.npr.org/sections/world-c...es-his-present

"In this band ... I want everything that you have. I want every bit of musicality you have. That's what I demand from everybody," Dave says. "Boyd has not been able to bring that or a long time ... and for that reason, he had to go and take care of himself."

Seems like Dave took the kind of step that was difficult for him to take, and acted like the band leader.

It's crazy because we all saw this awkward dynamic between the band and Boyd in those 'making the album' videos.

Except what he goes on to say, especially in the World Cafe interview, is that he is far more interested in the musicians playing "their notes" and not "the notes".

A violinist coming into the band now would just be trying their best to copy the album version of the violin. Bringing in a piano did not have that weight hanging over it.

None of this is a surprise. As time wore on it is clear that the rest of the band was working hard and playing well while Boyd just got more and more out of tune as the years went on. I was listening to an early/mid 2000s version of Pig earlier today and Boyd sounded horrendous on it, even though it was a "signature Boyd part."

That said, I'm pleasantly surprised to see how honest Dave was about Boyd in the interview. I thought for sure we'd never get a concrete or direct answer about BT from any member of the band.

It's crazy that he's opening up about this so much, I don't think he's ever been anything but fiercely guarded about what gets said about their private interactions. Maybe he feels he has to clear up what happened in the wake of #SockGate.

We haven't yet about BT#2. Frankly, I'd be more curious what happened with Butch Taylor than I am/was about Boyd.

I met Butch a few years ago. He was playing with a Jazz group who came to perform where I went to college. Went up to him afterwards and said I loved his work with DMB and he wasn't weird or dismissive when I said that but no really professional musician would be. Should've just asked him

He would've probably said the road was tough on him and his family. I thought that's what he said publicly? I think we are all speculating that it was more than that
