Difficulty in work undertaken? There's no tracking to mess with on DVD players. Pretty sure teachers have it easier nowadays.

People that haven't taught (I did for 8 years) or lived with a teacher (parent, spouse, etc) have no clue what it's like. They think they do, but they don't. People like Rog will go on and on about the summers off and how teachers are overpaid, etc.

It changed near the end of The Governator's second term.

I see pros and cons to it. I like the notion that the two best people might come from the same party and get a chance to square off in the general election rather than cancel each other out in the primaries.

On the other hand, it can lead to scenarios were a party gets locked out of the general election, like the senate race Harris won in 2016. I dunno that that's such a great thing.

The Harris-Sanchez race was so dull — "I have the same position as my candidate, but vote for me because I'm going to do the same thing as her, just better."

Got it. When was Arnold out of office, like 2010?

In IL we have primaries for everything but there are a lot that just go unapposed on the republican side so the primamry becomes the actual election on the democrat side.

I guess the closest we have to that is a "runoff" election, which because it's between two democrats kind of becomes exactly what you quoted above. A new election over two people with very similar ideas/stances.

Yeah, 2010. And his successor, Jerry Brown, terms out this year, so we're voting tomorrow for his replacement. It'll probably turn out to be Gavin Newsom (D).

Edit: I think Newsom and Cox (R) are gonna win tomorrow. There's a chance it'll be Newsom vs. Villaraigosa, but I think getting Uncle Donald's endorsement gave Cox just enough push.

I think a lot of this, let's call it misunderstanding, might stem from a bad case of 'only reading the headline'. A lot of the Twitter activity I've seen around this topic today originates from this AP tweet:
