Oh, I saw that coming... but I'm also not sure how much 'truth' was involved in creating the movie. With how ridiculous certain things were, I would have to guess that they just used the idea for a basis of creating the movie and used very little 'fact'.

Really enjoyed this one. It relied heavily on some basic horror tropes for the mechanics, but they were pretty well executed. There were some really memorable shots. Most of the humor was well timed and landed well. Need to chew on it a bit more, especially how I feel about the ending, but I think this one may finish pretty high in my rankings.

I haven't stopped thinking about it since seeing it yesterday, but that's not necessarily a good thing. It was well on its way to being a surefire top 10 entry by the end of the year, but the ending just didn't sit well with me at all.

There was a whole lot to like up to that point though, and I already want to rewatch it.

About the ending:

It didn't come out of nowhere; they gave a fair amount hints that that was what happened throughout the movie. Though admittedly, once I picked up on the hints, I was thinking the switch happened during the movie's time frame, not when they were kids. So that was still surprising, but built up to enough that I think they earned the twist well enough. I think what is sticking with me is trying to figure out how the son figured it out and/or why he's now afraid of her because of it. His reaction would make more sense if they switched as adults.

I never liked the original... always thought it was the worst Disney movie. No clue why it was remade.

@Matthew (regarding the ending of Us)

I have fewer issues with the twist than I do its nonsensical implications. I thought they telegraphed it pretty early with the fact that she was the only shadow/clone capable of speaking, and it became even clearer when she went all primal on the surviving twin, which is when her son first started to expect that something was off. Not to mention the fact that one of the key scenes in the trailer was her getting choked out in the hall of mirrors. They intentionally held off on showing that happen because they weren't ready to show what happened afterwards.

While we don't know how long she ended up being chained to that bed, I have a hard time believing that she wouldn't have been resourceful enough to escape decades earlier, or at the very least she could have separated herself from everyone else to avoid being impregnated or otherwise bothered.

But even setting that aside, the tethering rules are absurd. First and foremost, the real little girl would never be beholden to her replacement on the surface, which really makes you question the litany of hardships she laid out during her first monologue. While the twist in Get Out may have been even more ridiculous, it mostly works because they didn't provide too much exposition. Once you start creating rules, you start contradicting them. Tethering only occurred in the movie when it was convenient. An army of shadows/clones having the autonomy to revolt against the surface is completely illogical once you find out their limitations.

It's not really scary at all. There are a few well placed jump scares, but nothing that sticks with you after you walk out of the theater.

How is it when it comes to the gore factor? What I liked about Get Out was that it was largely tame on that scale. I hate gore just to gore.

Previews make it seem pretty bloody.

Less than I thought there would be. Often times there was blood spatter without any sort of graphic mutilation. I'd still call it tame.

The sound of the kills is the goriest part. There's a decent amount of blood, for sure, but there's not much that'll make you turn your head. I certainly wouldn't say it's gratuitous.

I didn't think it was super scary; more tense.

Hell or High Water

Methodical and well executed. Felt slightly derivative of No Country For Old Men, but that certainly isn't some huge knock. I enjoyed it, don't know if it is much more than a B+ modern crime western.

The End Of The Tour

Wow. I am still digesting this, but I was blown away. The way this film was able to articulate feelings of ego and inadequacy hit very close to home. I will probably watch this again very soon.

Has anyone read David Foster Wallace? Is Infinite Jest worth checking out?

I've had Infinite Jest sitting on my bookcase for a while. I tried reading it as ebook and, as noted, quickly realized it's near impossible that way.

End of the Tour is great though. I've rewatched it a couple times.

I'm fine with long; a few of my favorite books are over 1k pages.


I just couldn't get into Infinite Jest between the narrative jumping all over the place and having to go back and forth to/from the footnotes.
