Re: COVID-19/new coronavirus thread

Wife's hospital is out of bed in their COVID unit, expanding into the remaining ICU beds. They are concerned come fall (November) they are going to be overwhelmed and overflowing. Not great.

Meanwhile, we have another outbreak at our factory and one of our machine operators is hospitalized.

I just want this to end. But it simply isn't going away without a vaccine because people can't be trusted to keep their guard up.

    Here is what’s happening here

As of Wednesday, there were 317 confirmed COVID-19 patients in Colorado hospitals — a 59% jump since Oct. 1 and the highest number since late May. Seventy-seven percent of the state’s available intensive care unit beds were in use Wednesday

We don't have the leadership and overall plan to tamp this down. It just boomerangs around the country.

If you live in the NE this map measures counties and their covid cases. I can't really vouch for their methodology someone will have to do that.

I can’t speak for the data itself, but we have been very proactive up here, much more so than states that were in much worse shape than we were. Our “strict” guidelines, and a community willing to get behind them have been huge during this whole pandemic.

I did go into sams today and was pleasantly surprised because there were very few people there (I forgot about plus hours). The only person that was shifty with their mask usage was an older gentleman that used a scooter to get around. I didn’t judge, but more so felt sorry because if there was anyone that was likely to have serious complications, it was him (age, weight, and I presume general health due to scooter).

Wanted to post some updates. Girlfriend tested positive and I tested negative. Going for another test today. Other than loss of smell and taste and a light cough, she has been relatively fine. I’m feeling better than I did last weekend but the fatigue factor has been rough, especially with virtual teaching and online grad school. If I test negative again, I’m going to be very confused. Although, I do know a few cases anecdotally where one spouse/person had it in a a household and the other person never got it. Just odd to me.

Wife says right now that 25 beds are reserved for COVID and the unit is full. She expects next week to have to start eating into the remaining ICU.

Would be very interesting if you had symptoms, wife had a positive, but you had something other than COVID; but it's possible.

Either way, hope you and your girlfriend have a 100% recovery soon!

The only thing I can say good happening in my metro area is that hospital stays seem shorter. We are close to as bad as it has ever been in terms of new hospitalizations per day, but our number of overall hospitalizations is not rising as quickly, indicating we are shortening hospital stays and getting better at treating this so people can get out sooner and we can have space ready for the high amount of new admissions each day.

My state as a whole (Missouri) is a very different case, easily at our highest hospitalization level we have been, but the St. Louis area is still about 200 patients below what our highest volume was in April.

Thanksgiving travel is likely a no go for my wife and I. We just don't see how we can be good citizens and drive 4 hours to minnesota, hang out with 15 other people for 2 days, and then drive back while Wisconsin is going through this.

It doesn't help that my family is all over the map in how serious they are taking this.

Monroe County has the lowest positivity rate of any place in the country with over 500k people. I have no idea why honestly. I would say mask usage is normal here not above average, we still have large parties in restaurants and gatherings. College is back in session, private schools have classes 5 days a week in person. Our local public school is doing hybrid , 2 days in 3 off 50% class size. Our biggest rise in cases came months after the initial lock downs and mask mandate, right before we were opening to phase 1. I guess we will see what happens this winter, it will interesting to see how things play out up here.

It’ll just be the four of us, plus maybe my parents for Thanksgiving. I’ve been seeing them weekly anyway, so Thanksgiving wouldn’t make a difference.

My mother in law knows we won’t get together indoor with the family (there’s 25 between my husbands siblings, spouses, and kids and they’re regularly going out to restaurants, with friends, etc. My father in law’s little band is even putting on a show at a bar this weekend. Needless to say, we don’t see them).
So, she proposed an outdoor dinner. Like, not on the patio of their house, but at their campground in the Laurel Highlands. Um, no.
We’ll be hoping for snow so we can ski the next day (like last year) and I’m not into seeing them anyway (even outside) or having thanksgiving dinner around a campfire. We’ll catch them (hopefully) next year.

Thanksgiving and Christmas aren’t happening with my extended family, which I’m actually THANKFUL for (ironic). It’ll just be my parents, my family and my brothers family. My grandparents will be invited (2 Grandmas and 1 Grandpa, all in their 80’s) but they probably won’t come. My one Grandma might because she lives alone and will be bored/lonely. So at most 12 people. We’re all pretty safe and spend time together regularly anyway, and we live in a county with very low covid activity.

My wife, on the other hand, has a GINORMOUS family. Her Dad is one of 8 siblings, and they all have multiple kids with spouses or SOs, and grandkids. If everybody shows up (never happens) there would be over 100 people in this extended family. Her grandparents are in their 80’s and have many health problems, but nobody gives a fuck. They are planning to go full on with the usual holiday plans. They are using the fact that it will probably be her Grandpa’s final round of holidays to try and guilt everyone into coming. My wife is adamant that we aren’t going, but she might cave. I’ll just do what I normally do, sit off to the side, watch my kids, and wait for her to be ready to leave. Only while wearing a mask.

With most of my extended family we just have an unspoken agreement that we only get together at holidays because it makes my grandparents happy to have everybody together. As soon as they pass away, we will all most likely cease to be in another's life as anything more than casual acquaintances. So I don't feel bad about this at all.

That is kind of how they get an average. Could be luck could be people are behaving better than you think.

It's super above average, because the south and fly-over states are really bringing that average down.

Was in Rochester for 24 a few weeks back. People outside wearing masks (at Powers, picking pumpkins) was crazy to see. Was like another world for my wife and I, having gone through this all down south.

This site now has mask usage data.

Mask compliance was already strong in New York, but it seems to be picking up the last week or so. Numbers are starting to come up again.

Of course. It's not so much the masking, but the physical distancing, especially if people are wearing non-filter types of masks.

    Interesting.

He uses cambodia as an example of where covid was low and flu was high...what about new Zealand? Didn't they have both low coronavirus and flu?

    Love the kicker:

Then again, these are people who think that we can "mitigate" temperature spikes and hurricanes.

Our local public school is doing hybrid , 2 days in 3 off 50% class size. Our biggest rise in cases came months after the initial lock downs and mask mandate, right before we were opening to phase 1. I guess we will see what happens this winter, it will interesting to see how things play out up here.
