As far as fish I feed them a variety of frozen food. Shrimp, Krill, Clam, Scallop, Oyster etc. You can buy frozen foods that have pretty much all of this in it. The two big fish (yellow and blu tang) need veggies so they get seaweed on a clip pretty much every day. Or some sort of frozen vegetable food. The corals are filter feeders so they eat pretty much plankton. So i have to put a few drops of that in the tank every other day along with some Oyster eggs.

There are a shit load of little organisms in the tank such as copepods the fish also eat. I could probably go on vacation for a week or so and not even worry about feeding them.

Definitely expensive. I spend a couple hours a week on it probably. Filter system does most of the dirty work.

DUDE. I made a thread like this a long time ago but apparently no one around here was into reef tanks. I have a coral tank right now, it's only 14 gallons, but I can't afford much more. I'm actually studying oceanography, so the entire reef habitat is incredibly fascinating to me. I'm happy to know someone else on this board is into reef tanks.

Nice tank, btw. It probably took a long time since that leather coral is enormous. How big is your tank though? it looks a little overcrowded with 2 tangs, the clownfish, and the goby?

EDIT: I didn't see the mandarin till just now. How long has that one been in there?

Its 65 gallons. The two tangs will need to be moved eventually. Which will pretty much be my excuse to get a bigger tank I have had the Mandarin for around 7 months or so I would say. He actually just started eating frozen food this week. I was pretty happy about that. He is always cruising around picking copepods off the rock. Probably my favorite fish.

Money wise?? I'm not even sure how I could put together a figure. I'm at the point now where I'm not buying anymore fish or corals. I'm just letting it go. Its pretty much packed full. I can honestly say I'm thousands in at this point. Now I just need to buy salt, food and supplements which is pretty minimal compared to what we have already spent.

Nice. I've never had a mandarin, but I've only read that they are quite delicate creatures, so if it's lasted 7 months it sounds like you know what you are doing. I used to be a regular member on nano-reef.org and there were some incredibly impressive tanks on that website. My 14 gallon tank is a commitment, so I bet the 65 gallon is a lot of work--although the pay off is worth it.

Also, copepods rock. I'm not sure I've seen as many copepods in my sand as much as amphipods, either way, free food!

Oh yeah, do you use a ro/di unit for water changes?

They are pretty hardy as long as your tank has been up for a year or so and you have some type of refugium with macroalgae growing in it so the copepods can breed without predators getting to them. You just need to make sure that the pod population stays up so the mandarin has enough to live off.

I have a 75 gallon per day ro/di unit in my bathroom. I keep around 20 gallons of ro water handy. I also have a 20 gallon reef tank in my bedroom with 2 fish and 2 seahorses in it. Kind of a new project but it seems to be doing well right now. I have has the seahorses for around 2 months now. I do a 10 percent water change out of the 65 reef once a week and a 30 percent or so out of the upstairs tank. I have to feed that tank a little more to keep the seahorses happy so it gets a little dirtier.

You have a pretty sweet operation going on. One day when I have the money and space, I'd love to start a larger tank. Seahorses would be nice to have too. Have you had any issues with worms or other strange animals? A few months ago this monstrous red worm with what seemed like 18 heads emerged out of my sand and crawled straight up towards the lid. My clown fish ate it before I had time to take a picture. Either way, I was like for a solid week at how insanely unusual it looked.

Ya tons of Worms. Mostly Bristeworms which are thought to be of no harm. Actually a good part of the cleanup crew since they eat left over food and fish shit. They are pretty damn gross looking though.

That reminds me of this guys page I followed years back. 500 gallon reef tank and a worm was living in the pvc pipe used to stable his live rock.

I don't know if you've heard of Takashi Amano, but his fish tanks are probably the most stunningly beautiful tanks I will ever see. I've been jealous of them for years:

    http://www.amanotakashi.net/portfoli...ium/index.html

If you youtube him, he built a massive fresh water tank that probably cost ~1 million dollars to make. He trained his angel fish to respond to a rhythmic tapping that indicates it's time to be fed. Pretty amazing stuff over in Japan.
