I feel like this is a good descripto on why people need to alter their expectations:

Graphics won't define next-gen
Eye candy made a big splash at the dawn of gaming's previous generation. That will not be the case this time around -- for the most part. Sure, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have the graphical chops that are sure to impress anyone who hasn't experienced a high-end graphics card for the past two years. But the dramatic jaw-dropping jump from standard definition to high definition that took place eight years ago will not happen again.

Instead, next-generation gaming will be defined through a multitude of variables. Gamers want to experience interactive software in ways they never thought were possible. Perhaps that lies in the heartbeat-sensing Kinect camera or game-screen-sharing features built into PlayStation 4.
However you choose to label it is irrelevant. Games need to evolve beyond regenerative health and compelling cinematics. They need to push the envelope in new directions. The hardware is here, and the talent is ready. These are the elements that will truly define "next-gen."

I could not disagree more with that blog post. We don't know nearly enough about the PS4 or XBO at this point to say they are not innovative. Plus there are plenty of counter arguments against how this blogger thinks the Wii U is so innovative.

I don't disagree at all, but 4K gaming in the next generation will be a pretty big deal graphically speaking since it will be higher resolution than even any computer can currently output. It will allow for super sharp details on huge screens (80"+). I agree that gaming will never again be the primary focus of consoles, but if properly implemented, 4K will probably be a pretty big deal graphically speaking.

I still have a launch 360. I think I'm just going to buy a quiet, new 250GB 360 with HDMI out and wait a couple years for a real reason to upgrade. So far nothing about the XB1 or PS4 is motivating me to upgrade.

This exactly. I'm sure the next gen consoles will be very impressive in terms of improved graphics, memory capabilities, load times, etc. etc. But none of these things are significant enough for me to drop $500 on one. The PS3 already has great graphics, and I don't even come close to using the 120 GB hard drive I have. The only thing that's really drawing my interest is the new wave of games that will come out with the new systems.

I'm probably way off on this, but I feel like graphic advancements are pointless until we get a new wave of television advancement as well.

Microsoft’s next Halo game is coming exclusively to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

In what appears to be a bid to bulwark Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 against the odds, Microsoft has announced the latest in the popular Halo franchise is coming to Windows touch-screen devices.

Halo: Spartan Assault takes place between the events of Halo 3 and Halo 4. Developed by Vanguard Games and 343 Industries, the new game launches this July for $6.99. It will include optional in-app purchases.

From the game’s description, it appears there will be some integration between Halo 4′s Spartan Ops and the mobile game:

With 25 unique missions featuring unrivaled action and intensity, the single-player experience allows you to compete against friends in Leaderboards or hone your skills with Weekly Challenges. Replay the missions to collect more than 40 in-game Achievements and Medals.

For fans who already have a prospering Spartan career aboard the UNSC Infinity, “Halo: Spartan Assault” lets you earn experience points (XP), all-new Achievements, and emblems for your “Halo 4” Spartan, with additional integration features available after launch.

It looks like a decent enough mobile game, and certainly a much-needed release on the Windows Phone platform. The screenshots (which you can see in the below gallery) look very pretty, though not ground-breaking.

To be honest, I think Microsoft should release Halo 4 as a Windows 8 game as well—the game was one of my favorite shooters of 2012, and my personal favorite entry in the franchise since the original.

Hopefully the Xbox manufacturer funnels some of the cash they’re devoting to the Xbox One into both PC and Windows Phone game development, especially if they’re hoping for some unity across the three platforms. I’m not a huge fan of most mobile titles, but there’s no denying their importance to the Windows Phone’s long-term viability.

Games aren’t the be-all, end-all of a mobile platform, but I do believe the success of Apple’s iPhone can largely be attributed to the much better apps (and especially game apps) that have been available on that device. The Windows Phone, and Nokia’s offerings in particular, looks like a perfectly good platform with excellent devices, but without similarly excellent apps and games, it will simply flounder.

I’m not sure whether Halo: Spartan Assault will move any units for Microsoft, but it’s a good start.

It's just a mobile Halo game they made. It doesn't appear to be meant as a successor or replacement to a console game.

I will be at e3 next Tuesday, looking forward to seeing what they have. I went for the first time last year and loved it, if anyone ever has a chance to go, it's definitely worth checking out.

Seeing as how much more it offers, the prices we pay for other tech toys (tablets, phones, etc.) and that it should last a few years, that seems like a fair price. So long as games don't cost a bigger premium.

No. The Kinect is completely integrated into how the device works. That would have been like cutting off both of its legs.
