Re: **The Official Vinyl Collectors Thread**

If anyone is seeking out the S/T Blind Melon album (IMO one of the best and most underrated albums of the 90's, IMO), definitely hunt down the MOV pressing. It's not all analog, but it was done from a 24/96 digital master and much better than the 2013 RSD version, which I think was a CD master and only has a rating of DR9 in the Dynamic Range database. It really comes to life - even a song like No Rain that I've heard approximately 6 billion times just sounded so alive and fresh. Great separation between instruments and nice wide soundstage.

both editions were on white vinyl rumors of a third edition coming in October

One of the only records I own that I bought and never even opened :/ Never really feel a need to listen to it...

A must have for any phish collector though I'm ordering some record frames though and will have to open it before I put it in there lol

BTW - any recommendations on ready-to-go record frames? more focused on framing the cover and I don't think that I need the ones that open easily so you can have them framed and still use them. I'll really only be framing the covers (maybe a few etched discs) and maybe 1 or 2 will have a cover and an etched disc together

Just sat down to listen to my recent gets. Only have sampled them, but here's my current $0.02

Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step MOV repress sounds ALIVE and vibrant. I had heard the original 2003 pressing was very good as well so I'm glad this one has seemingly followed suit.

JT - 20/20 Experience. Only have listened to Side A and my initial impression is it sounds......dead, muddy, and flat . Maybe that will change as I keep listening. I want to compare it to the CD as well before i give it a final judgement, but I'm not entirely impressed. Was hoping for a lot more shine and sparkle, just am not hearing it yet.

I have always been pleased with the MOV pressings I've grabbed (Live's Throwing Copper comes to mind). One thing I've thought is cool they are straightforward about what they're using as a master if you ask them (pretty sure Doby told me to just ask them, of course). The ones I've asked about they typically say "high res audio files (192 KHZ / 24 BIT) of the original master".

The main reason I bought the OP of 13th Step is because the OP was $10.18 in one of those online sales and the Capitol pressing of Mer De Noms I have sounds pretty good to me. I wouldn't be surprised if MOV had a better pressing but without asking I'm betting it's the same master and they're probably pretty close. Pretty sweet you got one of the colored numbered ones.

Next on my wantlist from MOV - Built to Spill's Ancient Melodies of the Future.

MOV's Alice in Chains Unplugged sounds pretty fantastic as well. And of course their RATM s/t (MOVLP043) is just.....perfection.

Birthday is coming up and I was thinking about getting some new bookshelf speakers. Are these worth it? I know Polk is definitely an upgrade from some Sony stock that I have now.

That's just slightly out of my price range right now ha! I'm pulling the trigger on a Debut Carbon any day now so I was hoping to get some new speakers with whatever funds I *might* have left.

I'd buy these instead if you're looking at purchasing new Polk bookshelf speakers: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-M...-/231555776662

Only $5 difference but might be cheaper for you since there is no tax or shipping via Polk's eBay store. These are better Polk speakers and will give you more bang for your buck.

    No brainer.

That's cool that they've got their own ebay. Maybe that's pretty standard practice for companies-- I don't ever use ebay.

Thanks for the recommendation guys. I remember looking at those when I upgraded my gear a few years back. At the time I thought - when I upgrade next, I'll get those. Thanks for reminding me. I'm gonna get those for sure.

Did some digging - Found the Pearl Jam Vault #5 release: http://pearljam.com/goods/product_in...oducts_id=3350

    Las Vegas, NV - 11/30/93

Funny thing is, I just got a vinyl bootleg of this show in the mail yesterday. Sounds fantastic. Saved almost $20 buying the bootleg. http://www.soundstagedirect.com/pear...-records.shtml

What's the complaint with the UTTAD pressing? I played side A last night for the first time and it sounds good. Not the most impressive piece, but certainly not as atrocious as some of the other pressings DMB has released.

My Mumford & Sons 7" sounds over-compressed just like the digital files do, I'm not buying the vinyl.

I love the album, but not the sonics. Unfortunately unlike Sigh No More this album will NOT be eligible for nomination for a Dynamic Range Day award.

Not done AAA as the original description suggested, mastered by Ted Jensen and thus similarly reduced dynamics to the original.

Short story: Missed opportunity. Not a bad pressing, just not nearly as good as it could have.

On another note, listened through JT - 20/20 Experience. My initial opinion still stands, just not all that impressive. Moreover, very noisy pressing which is disappointing as there are plenty of quieter moments in the album and all you end up hearing is cracks and pops.

Some tracks sounded more dynamic than others, the one that stood out the most was "Let the Groove Get In". Generally speaking though, the album just didn't shine the way I feel like it could have. More than likely just a pressing of the CD master.

Conclusion: Not the worst pressing I've heard, but not worth the investment.

Ok, so I'm not missing anything.

I don't expect anything from this band to WOW me anymore. I'll take the UTTAD release as small misstep.
