we got into a big argument because because he is now an independent film maker and his whole basis for making films is to get rich. he has no desire to actually create art, he wants to create a paycheck. he kept saying that to do that he needs to make movies people want to see, even if it means shitty movies. he seems to think any movie that makes money is successful.
i guess i was equally difficult because as an english major i focused on how movies should be art and have some kind of meaning to them. he seems to think there's no way to be artful and make money.
i was pissed that movies like avatar and teen flicks and martin lawrence movies open up on thousands of screens whereas movies like the road and up in the air are limited releases and he's ok with that because it's all about business and money.
i told him i'd rather be f scott fitzgerald and live my life as a struggling writer but doing it my way, than to be michael bay who is a studio whore and has no redeeming value.
