Re: ***Official AFTW Midnight Stream Review Thread***

I always thought this when I heard Sweet live, but i LOVE when the whole band comes in midway through...

If I had to describe this album in one word, it would be Beautiful.

The jam at the end of Snow Outside is absolutely amazing. Not many ways to describe it, but it's pure magic. WOW.

I really think that Broken Things, The Riff, Snow Outside, and Drunken Soldier are "elite" songs that stand apart from the rest. I do enjoy the others (not Sweet) but I really think that those 4 tracks are amazing top tier DMB songs.

There is no song on this album that I want to skip. That counts for something, since even the Big 3 have songs I skip almost every time through (Too Much, Nancies, Stay).

BTW, I object to the word fail being added to the tags in this thread - we got a thread at midnight SOMEWHERE, didn't we? I never specified a time zone

Re: ***Official AFTW Midnight Stream Review Thread***

Finally got to listen to this tonight! Great effort by the boys. Finally made another album that shows off their capabilities as musicians/songwriters. I won't bore everyone with another song-by-song breakdown. But I will say this.

I feel like the band that said goodbye, for now, at the end of BTCS finally returned home after a long and crooked journey, where much was lost yet much was learned. I was wondering if I'd ever hear that band again. This is that band (sans Roi + Jeff and Rashawn, of course). I remember upon hearing Gaucho the first time, I was like, "Ahh, this is what the band is supposed to sound like. Hello Steve Lillywhite."

The lyrics of course are not quite up to Dave's previous work, but that is to be expected these days. But the musicianship by all members is top notch. And Boyd! This is the most Boyd has played on a studio record since BS. And he shines. One minor gripe: Jeff and Rashawn are great, but I almost wish they'd assert themselves in the foreground some more rather than just play a supporting role in the background.

Highlights for me: Broken Things, BBN, Mercy, The Riff, Rooftop, Snow Outside, Drunken Soldier, particularly Boyd's line and the vocal melody. Dave has rediscovered melody on this album, which is very refreshing. I also love Rooftop's swagger.

Also, Belly Full was a nice surprise. A nice little ditty.

What I love above all else is that one listen has made me want to listen again to discover the nuances that I can tell are there. BW didn't even really make me want to do that. Good job DMB!

Song titles that Dave used prominently in the lyrics on this one:

    Say Goodbye
    So Right
    Too Much
    Stand Up
    You and Me
    Satellite

I havent had a chance to look but this must be the first time he hasn't said Monkey on an album. Interesting.

He's right! How the hell does this happen, BW was leaked like a week before it was to be released. The power of the internet.

    ***DISCLAIMER***

Just as a disclaimer, do not take anything I say as meant to be offensive or "man, stop yo hatin on da boyz" . I'm just giving my initial opinions, and they are just that: opinions. I'm not the same person I was when Busted Stuff, Stand Up, or BWGGK came up. I won't defend Dave till the ends of the world anymore but I also won't bash him just for the sake of "OMGZ, BTCS FOREVZ!". I've grown up. I've changed. The band has grown up. They've changed.

Now, onto my short and to the point review.

    Broken Things
I like the contrast of the verse and chorus. It’s pretty. I can without a doubt see the Blue Water similarities. Dave lyrics seem preachy and sometimes look like they settle on a rhyme before caring about the content of the line.

    Belly Belly
Meh. It’s like Cornbread all over again but with a better chorus. But I hate Cornbread. The chorus seems to wear out its welcome halfway through. And Dave rehashes way too many lyrics and ideas. Belly Jelly? Uh, really?

    Mercy
Outro is nice. That’s about it. Would have been a nice build up.

    Gaucho
Verse was nice. Chorus wasn’t all that bad (I’ve heard worse).

    Sweet
Beruit’s next cover. Uke, horns, violin. I called it first.

    The Riff
Better studio than live. Go prog rock.

    Belly Full
Coldplay’s Till Kingdom Come first came to mind. Stupid lyrics follow.

    If Only
Never liked it live. Still meh on it.

    Rooftop
Dave is back to riff based patterns. Nice to hear. Still resorts back to same subject matter. I could have bet my life I’ve heard this chorus before. Liked the interlude. Repeat the chorus ad nauseaum.

    Snow Outside
Was waiting for something big to happen for the chorus…it never did. Lyrics seem like they try to be poetic in the same way Stay or Leave did but, well, Stay or Leave were. Boyds part is nice. Outro is good, but builds in a way that the tension never really amounts to anything carthetic except footsteps and noodling.

    Drunken Soldier
Part 1-OMG! LEGEND OF ZELDA! GERUDO VALLEY!
Part 2-Not going to lie, I got choked up.
    Part 1-same
    Part 2-same
Part 1-Chorus is nice. I like it. So far this is the only song that has kept my interest.
    Part 3-Proggy again.
Part 1-I like Dave’s vocals. Harmony in the right is nice with boyd and jeff.
    Part 2-same
Part 1-A little overload on the chorus, but I’m still interested.
    Part 3-same
Part 4-Kind of a downer. I’m expecting a giant ending and if I don’t get one I’m going to be cutting this thing off around the 5 minute mark (looks like I’ll be cutting it off)

Overall, it was a nice effort, thereby opposing most of my review. Maybe it's a grower. Maybe I'll pick up things later on. Maybe it will click.

The reason why it clicked so many times before (and the number one reason why I joined this site to begin with) was that there were those moments that made me come back again and again. Those moments that were just so good and so special that you wanted to return over and over, whether through albums, bootlegs, or the concerts themselves. I'm not going to name them; you know them already. I just wish there were more on this record.

Maybe in time, there will be.

    Overall: B-

Belly belly full bt solo eerily similar to tripping billies. Bt going back to the brown violin was the best thing he's done. Wow. So crisp on this record. Love me some bt

Great album. I feel after hearing these songs explored live for a couple of tours , many will hold some of the individual songs as elite, putting the album on the top shelf with the other three. But for now a great album, exceeding most everyone's expectations, even with Lillywhite.

Dave's voice and vocal melodies are outstanding. Musicianship and production outstanding.

Younger and new listeners to the band will be blown away imo.

Very accurate review in my opinion. Unfortunate though, I really had my hopes up after reading what everyone was saying.

    Overall: B-
First, I'm sorry about your views towards the album. I love it, so I have a reason to be happy this week.

Second, It is spelled cathartic. I normally wouldn't care, but the outro to that song was exactly that for me.

Not too crazy about the smooth jazz outro to drunken soldier...

Reminds me of Family Guy.. " I'm a prom night dumpster baby... and I'm taking a stroll"

only on my second listen though. Love the rest of the song though

Love BBN. Broken things. Rooftop. Snow Outside. sweet and if only.

Love the riff live but the studio cut is lacking something.

I know some people might say it's the newness or the honeymoon period for the album, but I've listened to it about three times through, and here's what I've got.

The way this album makes me feel after each listen reminds me of how I felt after I listened to Crash for the first time. As the outro of Proudest Monkey came to a close, I felt like I had just listened to something special, and my journey from casual fan to die hard began.

As Dave sings "That's not a star. That's a satellite" to end the album, all I could think about was Crash and how this album brought forth the exact same emotions from me. With BW, I felt like I had listened to a good rock album. With Everyday, I felt like I had just listened to a decent pop album. With Stand Up...let's not talk about it. With AFTW, I felt a had listened to an exceptional DMB album, something that I hadn't felt since the Big 3. Unlike previous records, I didn't have to wonder if Boyd was still with the band or be frustrated at the lack of Leroi (or Jeff). EVERY member of the band leaves their mark on this album, and at the very least, that's a major step in the right direction compared to past albums.

I know there are varying opinions about this album already, but I could see this becoming my favorite DMB album when years have gone by and these songs have become a part of my life in the way that songs like Ants, #41, Two Step, Last Stop, BOWA, Warehouse, etc. have. Now, I'm not going to say that AFTW is better than any of the Big 3, because that's extremely premature at this point, but I can say that based on how this album makes me feel when listening to it, it's definitely on par with them. The run from Rooftop to the end of Drunken Soldier might be the best 3 song run the band has ever done on an album, and yes, I know what all I'm including with that.

    As for the songs themselves,
Broken Things is just as good of an opener as SMTS, BOWA, or PNP -> Rapunzel IMO. And to me, Boyd's solo reminded me of some of his Blue Water solos, but again, maybe it's just me.

BBN reminded me of a cross between SMTS and JTR, which is nothing but a compliment.

What hasn't already been said about Mercy and Gaucho?

Sweet was just that. Sweet. As someone who has someone in his life that is rooting for someone to "make it out" this song hit home

The Riff was everything I hoped it would be based on the live recording

BBF for some reason reminded me of something off of a Jack Johnson
record, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

If Only had a real Santana vibe to it. I might be crazy, but I think Tim really killed this and made the song as great as it is.

And like I said, the last three songs are personally what I believe to be the best three song run every put on a DMB album. As someone who's had someone walk out of a long relationship the bridge "I gave you the best of me, but you said goodbye" hit me hard. Showed me that Dave can still write lyrics that can jolt me like that. Snow Outside was a perfect relaxation song. And that outro. Wow. And of course, Drunken Soldier lived up to the hype for me as the best closing song on any DMB album (barely ahead of Spoon and Bartender). So many sections and such musical diversity. They took a chance with this and it definitely paid off.

If I had to rank this album right now, I would put it tied for second with Crash right behind BTCS, but again, it's terribly premature to make a final decision. But anyway, I apologize for the long post. This album just reminded me of why I got into the band in the first place. Just an excellent album from top to bottom.

I'm loving this album, but man, is anyone else getting irritated by the timing issues in the first minute of Drunken Soldier? The instruments just aren't locked in! As someone who records bands regularly, I'd never release an intro in this state!

I might be way off, and I also should mention that I have absolutely zero recording or producing experience, but I thought it was disjointed intentionally. Only a tiny bit off, but definitely off - "drunken", maybe?

Yeah, I thought that too. Sounded like a bit of a mess at first, but like all things, after a couple of listens, it just starts to sound normal. Maybe it was intentional, who knows.

My guess would be that it was intentional.
