The Home Theater Thread

I'm surprised a home theater thread didn't already exist, so here it is. Let the discussion begin.

Tvs give me boners too if they are displaying porn, although HD porn isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Yeah I haven't seen, but I think that's one thing I'm cool with standard definition on. You don't want too much detail on certain things.

I can't wait to build myself a nice little home theater, I live in an apartment now and I don't really want to worry about running cables and what not. So I'm either waiting till I get a house or there is a decent wireless alternative.

You gotta be careful with HD porn, but from what I've heard some of the companies have been doing a good job, particularly Digital Playground.

    Re: The Home Theater Thread

I do love HDTVs, well nice ones that is.

I don't have the greatest one right now, but I like it and it does the job. It'll probably be a couple years until I upgrade to a bigger, better set though.
I got mine about a year and a half ago.

    I have this TV:
    http://www.circuitcity.com/IMAGE/pro...M.LNS3251D.JPG

    and this home theater:
    http://www.zdnetindia.com/productIma...71520711_1.gif

The things I like best about my TV is that the picture is great. It's bright, realistic and shows well for all types of media (TV, movies, games).
I also like that my home theater matches the look of the TV, which almost the entire reason why I bought it. It was my first one, and I didnt have a lot of money to spend so I didn't go crazy with it, or really care too highly about the quality. It does the job.

I would like to upgrade to a bigger, 1080p TV in the future. Probably between 46-52 inches. I can't decide if I would want an LCD from Samsung or Sony, or a Plasma from Panasonic. But if I bought today I have been liking Plasmas more and more because I believe they have improved the technology quite a bit and I am no longer afraid what people used to think would go wrong with them. So it would probably be a 50" 1080p Panasonic Plasma if I was buying today.
I would also like to upgrade my home theater system quite a lot, probably getting a nice receiver from Onkyo, some nice speakers from either Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio, Klipsch, or who knows what else. And definitely add a BlueRay player when I get the 1080p TV, although that will probably be a given by the time a get a new one.

Nice one. The new 800-series are being released in April, with THX certification and native 24p reproduction, although I don't know yet whether or not that means 72Hz, 96Hz or 120Hz.

Hopefully by the end of summer/towards xmas they will be around the $2,300 mark for the 50", because that's the one I've got my eye on!

    Pure TnA my friend.

Fuck I was in the Bay of all places and witnessed the most amazing HD ever. I mean the stuff at Best Buy didn't even compare. The Bay had this lone Panasonic Plasma hooked up to a Blu-Ray playing The Incredibles. It was jaw dropping, I couldn't take my eyes of the screen. Behind the TV they had a wall of HDs all playing the same hockey game and it just looked like utter shit, I don't understand why they do that.

I'm pretty sure you mean "Cars" right?
The Incredibles isn't released on Blu yet. Cars looks amazing though and I too have seen it at The Brick playing on a 40" LCD.

    Look something like this?

Hmm no it wasn't Cars, maybe there is a short on the Cars disc with that Incredible baby? It was this scene where the baby like bit through his play pen crib thing. Come to think of it I don't recall that scene being in the movie.

Yah that's pretty much what it looked like, hehe other than it being Cars. Is that the Brick?

Bought a very nice TV (37" LCD LG 720p/1080i res)
Bought a kinda low end sound system (Sony Home Theater in a box) but it is Digital and true 5.1
Bought a powered subwoofer to replace the non-powered that came with the theater in a box.
Bought two decent floor speakers for left and right noises, my TV duals as the center speaker for DVDS
Bought an up converting DVD player

Total Cost of home theater - $1700 total

People would save so much more money if they pieced together their systems instead of buying these "high end" systems that they don't even use at close to the fullest potential.

i know some audiophiles on here might scoff at it a bit, but it was the right price, easy to set up, and sounds pretty good to my ears.

through some unfortunate circumstances i've also inherited a Pioneer plasma 50", about 2.5 years old i think. I didn't inherit a stand though, and I haven't quite decided on how to mount it so I haven't used it yet.

edit - 50 inch, not 50 foot (that def would be tough to mount...)

for days i tried to get her to come shopping for systems with me, she said we didn't really need one, she didn't care, thought it was a dumb idea. when she finally caved, we listened to the one i had narrowed it down to. she said it was ok, but try the other one. we both liked the other one better and stretched the price range a bit to get it.

Nothing wrong with some of the HTiB's out there at the moment, especially not for a first foray into surround sound.

My first 5.1 system was a $250 JBL speaker system. (Receiver and player were separate)

My brother, sister and I chipped together and got my Mum a Sony HTiB for Christmas. HT-S2200 I think it was.

My current speaker set-up is a little better now:

    Fronts - Paradigm Monitor 11v5
    Center - Paradigm CC-370v4
    Rears - Paradigm Monitor 11v4
    Sub - Paradigm Servo 15v2

The sub is my favourite speaker. It has peaks of 4500 Watts, RMS 1500 Watts, accurate down to 12Hz. It's a ******** monster.

I'd like to replace the center with a CC-590 so that all 5 of my speaker have +/- 2dB down to below 50Hz. I listen to a lot of Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio discs so having full range speakers all around was important when I was deciding whether to go with bookshelves or dipoles for the rears - I went with floorstanding towers instead. Actually I replaced my v4 fronts with the v5's and moved the 4's to the rear.

The CC-590 can handle 150w as well, whereas the current center can only handle 120w. I'd like to upgrade my receiver to the Onkyo TX-NR905 as it processes DSD natively and has PCM1796 DAC's, which have 123dB dynamic range. The receiver can deliver 140w/ch and benchmark testing shows that it is an honest rating.

Anyway - here's a pic of the sub beside the right floor speaker. The grilles are only off for the pic. See what a monster that Servo sub's driver is? I mean, it just LOOKS like it wants to give you trouble breathing.

Here's a shot of the rears. You can see the JBL's still on the wall. These pics are over a year old and the JBL's have long since been taken down and wires covered by wall molding.

    Re: The Home Theater Thread

I will eventually get two more speakers to get full 7.1 sound as there is more and more 7.1 content becoming available now on Blu-ray, particularly from New Line and Lions Gate.

Right now my listening area is against the back wall, so I don't have room. 5.1 is just fine for now.

You really need 2-3 feet space behind your listening area to benefit the most from 7.1

Also, if anyone is looking for quality speakers without breaking the bank, www.axiomaudio.com is a great place to start. Their bookshelf speakers are excellent.
