The Future of Carter

There will be a day when Carter can no longer play like he currently does and considers retiring. What would you like to see the band do when that time comes?

Carter went on record pretty recently I thought I read, and basically said he wants to play drums in DMB until he can't do it anymore. I don't think he believes in the concept of retirement . Someone can chime in if this sounds totally made up, but I thought someone posted an interview here. With that being said, I think the most likely outcome is option 3, followed by option 1. If these guys want to keep touring, I will continue to go see them until it stops getting fun.

I'm voting option 3, but I think everyone on this website will agree that DMB truly ends the day Dave or Carter is no longer in the band. Option 2 would absolutely never happen.

And I will add, Dave with a backing band (Dave and Friends style) could be a big career renaissance for Dave when he's in his 60's-70's. He's still a pretty young guy in terms of the music industry. He's popular enough that anything he does will attract some attention.

i agree with your first post, and also would like to see option 3 be what happens, although i think option 1 is more likely. however, to this post with dave doing dave and friends, would this still just be D+T playing some DMB songs and then a band playing dave solo stuff? if its a backing band that plays DMB songs full band, i don't see why that would be any different than just continuing DMB with a new drummer.

Because I don't think it would be called DMB, and I think it would be a mix of his solo album(s?), covers, and the sprinkled in DMB hits. Think more Dave and Friends or The Trey Anastasio Band.

Hell, Dave could tour the country with his acoustic guitar and a small orchestra (in Beacon Theater type venues) and people would shell out a fortune to see it.

^facts. i.e. Bruce on Broadway. I recall truth in your Carter comments- I can't remember from where tho, either.

Optimistic for at least 10 more years. Carter's a stud.

if push came to shove, the lead guy from Monkeys on a String could do it.

No, this isn't a serious post but I'm blown away by his similarities to Dave. He crushes it

I don't think the band will ever perform without Carter. I could be wrong though. I think they will play fewer shows as get gets older...take more days off, etc.

And I agree, I think we will see a lot more Dave and Tim, Dave and Friends type shows as Dave gets older.

I understand he's getting up there, but I recently saw a picture of that man playing some golf and the dude is jacked for a 60 something year old. He might slow down because of age, but healthwise the dudes ready for some more years

DMB ends when Carter is done. Dave continues doing summer sheds with a new D&F lineup and some smaller spring/fall/winter shows either solo or with Tim

    Re: The Future of Carter

Carter might be going another 10 years for all we know. We really have no idea. I agree Dave and Tim can continue playing after that and even some iteration of a "Dave & Friends" lineup which we'd all see, of course. Whatever it is will draw huge crowds still. Hell this is off the charts but I am pretty sure if you took most of the band minus any 2 members (even Dave and Carter), rebranded it as anything else and toured, you'd still get great crowds. Like Dead & Company. People love this music.

What I would look for is DMB to shift to the Widespread Panic-style of touring one day if they age and want to slow it down. 3 nights at SPAC, 2-3 weeks off, 3 nights at DC, 2-3 weeks off, 3 nights at Gorge, 2-3 weeks off, etc. Like 5-6 venues per year with 2-3 shows each.

When Carter is “done” DMB is done
If he can play but not like he wants, maybe added percussion but then he isn’t “done”

D&T will go on I think
    D&F style could happen too
Fonz will do something, Jeff most likely too

Bottom line though, there is a big difference in touring line they do now and smaller/spaced tours.
I can see a cut back in dates long before an end

As a drummer, losing Neil was just horrible...and yes this is a perfect comparison.

When Carter is done the band as we know it is done but there will still be music to be made. I fully believe each member continues making music but you'll see Dave touring with a backing band.

    Carter - retires and golfs
Dave - Keeps playing with Tim and with a backing band here and there
Tim - TR3 and will play D&T shows
Stefan - Continues playing music with various side projects
Rashawn - Keeps doing his music with the likes or Ariana Grande and other pop performers
Jeff - Keeps playing his on side work

This performance of Turpentine by Dave always stood out to me as his future away from the band.

I always liked this performance from last year of Dave with a backing band too. I feel like this show gives a good indication of what Dave + a band playing DMB would sound like in the future. It naturally sounds nothing like Dave Matthews Band but retains the ability to play the music like outside of acoustic shows.

I love this choice of cover, great song. But, I feel like Dave's vocal on this is pretty rough. He's a bit tentative with pushing it, sounds like because his throat is a bit strained to begin with. Would love to hear him take another crack at this with a clean throat where he can really push it.

Love the sound with a different style of backing band though.

don't peruse DMB boards much these days, but has anyone discussed Carter not singing his usual stuff besides backup vocals this tour? No line in warehouse, no rap intro to minarets, ive heard he doesn't even do the laugh in watchtower?

I was going to say I can't believe I never saw this, but to be fair it was a bit of a crazy month.

Thanks for sharing, loved those. I do love the idea of Dave continuing post DMB with an assorted cast. I'll be seeing him until he's old and grey, god willing.

There’s no band if Carter isn’t beating the shit out of the skins with the crew. He’s one of the most talented drummers of all time (definitely top 5 in my opinion). No one could possibly step in if he were to retire….and I don’t think Dave would continue touring with the “band” if Carter isn’t with him. He would still do Dave and Tim shows or Dave and Friends shows but not DMB shows as we know them. Carter is too crucial to the band to do DMB shows without him. This of course is just my opinion.

I did notice the above stated less singing. Minarets and Watchtower in particular.

Dude is playing better this year than in 18 and 19 combined though. He's utilizing the entire kit way more, a lot like 2002ish Carter. Really great to see.

That said, this band is done when Carter has to or wants to quit. No one can fill his shoes.

Max Weinberg is 70. I know pandemic hit but as far as I know he is still going strong. Understand different style of playing but before pandemic at 68-69 he was still drinking 3-3.5 hour shows with Bruce

    Re: The Future of Carter

I think Carter still has plenty in the tank. Neil started losing energy around this age, but he also had brain cancer (RIP). As far as I can tell, Carter is healthy and seems on top of his game. I can see him playing until he's hitting 70.

Maybe they go acoustic in his last couple years, less shows smaller venues, etc. Or just slow the songs down and play less of the heavy stuff down the stretch.

Echoing what most other fans feel - If/when Carter retires, DMB fades with him. Dave & Tim will continue on well into their late age.

No Carter, no DMB. They all will do other things, but if Carter is replaced and they continue touring as DMB, Im done. Just my 2 cents.
