Government research grants are a good example. Government either foots the bill or splits it with a private company for say medical research. If it fails, the government loses the money but if it succeeds and is viable then the private sector comes in and buys whatever it is knowing it’s probably going to be a success and make money.

If the private sector didn’t have the government playing this role they’d have to put up and risk their own capital, leading to many more losses and probably companies failing all the time when things don’t pan out. This way, the private sector doesn’t take the highest risks, the government does.

So, is this capitalism? And does the private sector, or government get the credit for all these inventions and breakthroughs?

I’m an “Ayn Rand free marketer” but to act like our economy is anything close to that is silly. Just like the socialist leaners in here say they dont want true socialism those of us who want less state involvement in economics dont necessicarily want all regulations etc removed.

I'm sure lots of Trumpers are all about boycotting Harley because they may move to Europe...because of a dumb trade war that guy that a lot of Harley employees probably support. So..losing a job because we have a petulant toddler president. And some (or lots) of those employees may have supported the trade war ideologically until it might not fuck them personally.

I am pretty sure the next president she is going to be more to the left than Hillary or Obama. Obama tried to court the right and it never worked. He dropped the public option, instituted a pay freeze, had the sequester and evolved on gay marriage. Those were all unforced errors. The next president will make gay marriage mandatory. We will all be married twice.

Most Northern slave states made slavery illegal and slaves were emancipated. The problem with your argument is that while the Northern states may have had economies less dependent on slavery slaveholders would have been the people with the political power and could pass laws. It wasn't just economics, they did not think that slaves were on the same social footing and weren't going to tolerate them being free. Read the secessionist statements. Even after the economic argument was settled(meaning emancipation) we still had segregation, Jim Crow and the Civil Rights movement(segregation forever). White people did not want to associate with black folks. That is why Jackie Robinson is a hero.

If you read the news you see that black folks can't live their normal lives without being vetted no matter where they are. From cooking in the park to entering their own homes.

I think the Reconstruction through at least the civil rights era shows what a lot of people thought about african americans, after they were "of use" as slaves.

And while I understand that the North wasn't as dependent on slaves, wouldn't paid labor in the South drive up raw goods manufacturing costs in the North?

Recently watched the Ken Burns Civil War documentary so a lot of this is fresh on my mind. Could come up with quote after quote after quote similar to this. Racism and the inherent inferiority of the *n-word* was at the absolute forefront of the Confederacy and 1800s politics in general.

Lol at the South's whitewashing of their past. The Daughters of the Confederacy did so much damage and warping of what happened, deifying many horrible horrible men and loons.

Stonewall Jackson and Nathan Bedford Forrest being at the top of the list. At least Forrest was an actual tactical genius. Jackson was a loon.

Started watching this the other day as well. There was a quote by Lincoln that was kind of resonant, I’m paraphrasing but basically he was lamenting about how all men are created equal except blacks, next it’ll be all men created equal except blacks, foreigners and Catholics. He said when it gets to that he would rather emigrate to a despot like Russia where at least they live under division without the hypocrisy.

I forget the exact wording of the statute, but at the time he fired I don't believe it was reasonable for him to be in fear for his life. The guy was backing off.
