This is the worst decade for film ever. Should we do other decades as well. Would you be willing Clay?

Definitely surprised that movies like Frozen and 21 Jump Street made our top 170 but Life of Pi did not. I feel like that’s one of the few great movies that didn’t make the cut for some reason.

I'm not opposed to the idea, but it's not something I'd want to tackle again right away.

With next year's Oscar ceremony being pushed back to late April, we could set a deadline for the end of the year, and I can start posting results around the same time I would've originally been posting the Best of 2020.

Just let me know what we're voting on. I suggest we roll back the clock one decade at a time and go with the 2000s, though. I'd expect a better turnout and a more comprehensive list if we first cover periods when we were all alive.

Life of Pi just missed the cut for me. If I'd included it, it would've qualified.

Films I voted for that didn't make the cut:

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (#43)
    Les Misérables (#49)
    Doctor Sleep (#54)
    Snowpiercer (#59)
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (#66)
The Place Beyond the Pines (#67)
    Hugo (#69)
We Need to Talk About Kevin (#70)
    Swiss Army Man (#77)
How to Train Your Dragon (#88)
The Skin I Live In (#89)
    The Ghost Writer (#90)
    MacGruber (#98)

I am shocked Scott Pilgrim didn’t make the list.

We Need to Talk About Kevin was a big oversight on my part.

Very cool to see this list and admittedly I haven't seen nearly as many movies as you all. But was The Social Network really the best movie of the decade? I remember seeing it and it was fine. Maybe even good. But best of the decade? That floors me. Compared to some of those other movies? Not even close. What am I missing that made it so good?

Directing, writing, cinematography, original score - also tells the story of one of the youngest and most influential billionaires of all time. The most important movie of the last decade in terms of social commentary and filmmaking.

I am not sure I agree with either of those. I am more open minded to the argument for its commentary since that is a pretty subjective topic, but I don’t see how it broke a great deal of ground in terms of its filmmaking, nor can I name a lot of films that I can say “This exists because of The Social Network.”

Clay - how much did my ranking of Nightcrawler influence the voting? I kinda slapped my list together haphazardly in Letterboxd and I probably have it ranked too high, as much as I love it.

I would challenge you on this, which films of the last decade can you point to and say this exists because of this film that came out in 2010 or later? The easy answer would be sequels or something in a cinematic universe, which obviously this exists because of that.

I would say The Social Network paved the way for movies like The Big Short, Vice, The Report, Spotlight, Steve Jobs, & Moneyball. Adult oriented, dialogue first, based on true event scripts to be made by bigger studios with bigger named casts in the face of MCU and Star Wars IP's dominating the box offices. They're also movies that are looking back on events that happened within a decade of the film being released.

In terms of actually pushing filmmaking as an art? Eh, it's certainly as tightly and well made a Fincher film as you'll find.

I'll also concede on the subjective nature of the topic, although I will contend that Zuckerberg is going to be in our life and this film is the one that was made by an exceptional writer and director collaboration and chronicles his rise and it's made as close to the event as possible. I think it will be a movie that gets looked back on as something that sort of predicted this nerdy kid who pissed off some people on the way to making a social network site will become one of the most powerful people the world has ever seen.

I think it's pretty significant. Just my take.

I'm with Jesse on his social commentary stance, but as I look at our list, and take into account that we're over 100 years into the advent of filmmaking, I don't know that anything fits the strict definition you just laid out for "groundbreaking" cinema.

For my part, The Social Network would be my individual winner for best directing, screenplay, editing, and original score of the last decade. I'd also nominate it for best cinematography and ensemble cast. And as an attorney, I felt the use of the dueling depositions as a narrative device to not only drive the plot forward but also provide seamless flashbacks was a stroke of genius and much more realistic than some formulaic legal drama.

Without your #2 vote, it would've scored 15-20 spots lower. But I assume you still would have had it ranked somewhere, so it probably would've lost 5-10 spots realistically.

I'm not opposed to it. I'd suggest giving it a few months though just to let everyone have time to sort out their rankings and to give me a breather.

So what you’re saying is 2000’s lists are due August 27, 2021.
