We discussed the whole joint/separate accounts thing. We created a joint one when we bought the house, but as far as getting rid of our individual ones or whatever, we viewed it as solving a problem that wasn’t there.

We do run things by each other at a certain amount/level, and we know what our constraints are for spending. I handle all the finances but keep her as involved as I can/as she’s willing to be. I always want to make sure that if I were to go without warning, she’d be able to handle that side of things and know where/how to access what she needs.

There's just no real benefit to a joint account, honestly, and it requires more effort to close out old accounts and switch than is worth the perceived convenience.

Disagree. I think you just see it that way because you're used to it and that's fine. But it's no doubt easier to just have everythings drafted, every bill paid out of one account, seeing what your family's total available funds are, cash flow, etc. Then add in savings account(s), and compound all that if you have kids.

We have one bank but like 5 different accounts (checking, regular savings, longer term savings, one savings acct for each kid)

To your last point, I dunno how much effort is really required to close an account. It helped that my wife was a banker for 5+ years. And I also just kept the account I'd had since I was a teenager, with basically nothing in it.

The biggest benefit (IMO) is having one less account to manage/monitor, but I get closing/switching can be a pain (been there, done that).

On the bank subject, always keep your eyes open for your local branches or credit unions offering deals for $X if you open a new account and deposit a specific amount and maintain a certain balance for ~3 months or so. Easy free money if you're able to move the funds around or aren't tied down to your current financial institution.


I think our current bank Suntrust (now Truist) offered $500 when we opened our current account down here - we were changing banks anyways because our prior bank didn't have a location here and we wanted at least some level of local banking.

Yes. We use a joint card for everything and we each pay that off from our accounts. Super simple.

I'm sure having one account is simple, but closing accounts and moving that money around is a pain that requires physically going to a bank. Of which I have not done in probably more than 5 years

I just don't think it'd make life THAT much easier. We already have a bunch of accounts for various things at various places. Just combining checking accounts isn't going to change having our mortgage through a different bank (and one that we don't want to do our daily banking at), etc.

Called the insurance company, Progressive. I did ask the DA to file charges, and his lawyer kept delaying the hearing, presumably because if I did not show up, they would have dropped the case. With a CDL, it would have prevented him from driving a truck. On the 5th or 6th court date, when they realized I was still going to show up (the courthouse was a 5 min drive away from my office in downtown, and the guy lived in Conroe), they relented and said he was retiring anyway. I was just trying to make sure he wasn't able to drive recklessly again, because he could have really hurt someone - way too old to be driving an 18 wheeler.
