One of the best four-album runs in history. You'll find some songs that will be familiar to you, plus they're just four great records. If you have to pick one from that stretch, go with Exile.
This is correct. Sticky Fingers and Exile are considered to be their best albums. Banquet is also amazing. Let It Bleed is the weak link (only the beginning and end of the album is amazing) there IMO, but it's still a great great record.

'71-'72, they were at their peak musically, Micks vocals were raw and intense, Mick Taylor (the best lead guitarist they've ever had) was in the band, etc.

Sticky Fingers is such a heavy drug laden record but it's awesome

Exile is a double album and seems all over the place initially, but you grow to absolutely love it over time. I wouldn't start with this one.

By the way, Time Is On My Side is their greatest song. I remember seeing Fallen many years ago and being blown away by that song throughout...

Saw Shine A Light some weeks ago. It struck me how awesome it is that Mick gets away with his stage "behaviour". Any other rockstar would receive shit and laughter behaving like that...

    His dancing is brilliant!

I don't know if I would agree with that, but I think it is certainly their most underrated and definitely the last solid album they released.

my personal stones epiphany came when i first heard beggars banquet and the rolling stones rock n roll circus. they were so great back then its just incredible. some people cant get past the fact that they still perform and are obviously way past their prime but it doesnt change the fact that they were absolutely amazing.

i actually thought about making this thread a few days ago, but didnt since i didnt think too many people here listened to the stones that much. they are so great. i will take them over the beatles any day..but its not a competition. people are bound to make that comparison.

i wouldnt do that. they are ridiculously overpriced and the quality of their performance now is barely worth 30 bucks, much less 250 or whatever it is they charge. especially if your not a 'massive stones fan'. you will be dissapointed, but only because they are all in their 70's haha. not ragging on them at all but lets face facts

I definitely agree with you that Midnight Rambler is a million times better live than on LIB. Somehow, I don't think that translates to a song like Gimme Shelter though. I have never heard a live version of Gimme Shelter that captures the raw power of the studio track.

And sorry, I didn't mean to offend either. It's just that LIB, along with Neil Young's After the Gold Rush, revolutionized my life.

actually im not sure on that. dont take my word for it if you really want to go, i just know that their tickets are more than 100 bucks and given their present condition that is WAY overpriced. but if your willing to pay that much by all means go for it.

One of my favorite (if not THE favorite) albums of all time.

And I agree about Gimme Shelter - that studio version is godlike.

A friend just gave me the 40 Licks compilation. Only listened to disc 1 so far, but it's awesome.

Basically never listened to the Stones much before, so what else is worth checking out? Besides 40 Licks, and Can You Hear Me Knocking, Time Is On My Side, Heartbreaker, Monkey Man, As Tears Go By, Slave, Saint Of Me, Moonlight Mile, Out Of Time, and Play With Fire.

Like many have said, the run of albums from Beggar's Banquet through Exile on Main St. is pretty much perfect, you cannot go wrong with any of those. There's other great stuff too, of course, but you can't go wrong with anything in that run.

In regards to seeing them live nowadays, I heartily disagree that they are not worth the money. I saw them twice in 98 and 99 and they were amazing. Watch Scorsese's 'Shine A Light' and you can see that they absolutely still bring it to the live stage.

And yes, SOME tickets will run $250-300, but like any show, that's the top price tier and you can get down to the $50-60 range as well.

My personal ranking of that 68-72 run:

    1. Exile
    2. Sticky Fingers
    3. Let It Bleed
    4. Beggar's Banquet

I really like their recent work as well. Not on par with their best stuff of course, but I really enjoy most of 'Voodoo Lounge', 'Bridges to Babylon', and 'A Bigger Bang'. IMO they're all a lot better than some of the weaker older stuff like 'Black and Blue', 'Dirty Work', or 'Emotional Rescue'.

Some Girls is a SUPER underrated album too. Not a weak song on there, IMO that was their last truly *great* album.

I wish I could go through my discovering-the-Stones phase again.

Like everyone said, pick up Sticky Fingers (more immediately accessible) or Exile (a little all over the place initially, but a big fan-favorite as a whole package.) Let it Bleed and Beggars Banquet are also great; they're more on the acoustic/country side.

One of the most overrated bands ever. Also, their earlier stuff, is criminally underrated.

anyone buy the remastered release of Exile in 2010?

I did but bought it on itunes without the bonus songs...well i was in a record store the other day and found the exile rarities.

If anyone has not heard this please do yourself a favor and pick it up. 10 songs from the exile era that are all complete and amazing.

a couple fantastic balads "following the river" "so devine" and a few good pop songs.

also there's an alternate take of loving cup which is very different and the original version of tumbling dice called Good Time Woman
