I tend to play my game regardless of who I'm playing with, maybe screw around a bit and try low percentage shots if it's with buddies drinking but there is one big exception which seems to be the opposite from your experience..
One of my parents friends is a scratch golfer and has won the club championship at The Country Club in Brookline 6X, he stands on the tee box when you are hitting, tells you what he likes and doesn't like about your swing, tries to coach you on everything to the point he'll grab your club and direct it for you, he can be completely in your face and overbearing and I usually play like crap when paired together. I've asked him to stop, half jokingly waved my club around like a fly swatter to get room. I already take lessons regularly and know my strengths and weaknesses and what to focus on mechanically and usually shoot in the low 80's, it's so annoying
