This!! Benaroya is one of my favorite recordings that I own. I can't wait for Dave to do a full solo tour in smaller theaters. Hopefully that happens at some point.

Huh? Dave has sounded great recently and he is only 51. He sounded fantastic as recently as a few weeks ago (gun protest).

I've always hoped they would tour until they reached a point where the decreasing demand led to them playing smaller theaters. Probably an unrealistic dream.

Re: New Album Coming This Summer

I find it interesting that so many folks feel like this is the end of DMB in some way or another...either as a recording band or as an entity.

Up until Everyday, Dave always had a stockpile of tunes he was pulling from while also writing new tunes for each record. And Stand Up is another album that is almost (if not not entirely) a new/studio creation. And with both of these albums there have been boots/leaks of "old" tunes that were recorded during the sessions that weren't released. AFTW was supposed to be an album of "classic" unreleased tracks, but Dave decided he wanted to do new songs instead...not uncommon for a prolific writer.

As such, I'm looking at this album as being a bit of catch-up and new. They could do several albums of this over the next couple of years and I hope they do. I'd even love them to make a compilation live album of the best versions (best being the bands' favorite) of the unreleased tunes. Board mixes (or remixes if they need to bring up instruments) of hand selected performances would be great. If Dave finds the effort of studio work to be too much, I'd be more than happy for all releases of "new" material to be culled from live work.

For example, the best version I've heard of Break Free is from early in the 2016 tour...can't imagine a studio version being any better. So why not just release the board mix of this? Anyway, I hope you're all wrong regarding the negative notions. As long as Carter is up to playing at a level that he's happy with I'd love for the DMB to stay intact as is...or with a new member (fiddle or otherwise)...ideally with Boyd back...or whatever. And in that bring us new tunes.

Still very strained sounding to me. And also, that's after a year of no intense touring.

Dave's voice is fine, theres a reason he has a vocal coach on tour and is very careful with it. His voice sounded great on the D&T tour last summer.

Its about tours with tons of dates that do damage. They need to cut down some of the fat for both his voice and Carter.

Carter is the real concern. I have a strong feeling he was the key reason for taking last year off.

Dave’s voice is really bad these days. I didn’t even fully realize this until I rewatched performances from 2012-2013 when his voice still sounded somewhat healthy. He’s always straining these days. I think that vocal coach of his has made him a worse vocalist.

The vocal techniques/restrain he uses is to preserve his voice. It doesnt sound as great on certain songs but theres a purpose for it.

He is definitely not always straining.

hey... give him a Chris Collinsworth-style voice modulator, slap some arm implants in Carter, and the band is good for another quarter-century!

He was solid vocally for nearly all of 2017, has sounded great in some recent performances, was hoarse at Radio City doing the thing with Trey. Overall he is fully capable of 3-5 more years, his problem with the full band these days is he tried to overdo everything, part of why he messes up nearly every falsetto on DDTW when he is trying to push the sound as opposed to letting the sound out over exhaling air.

My wife, who was an Italian opera singer, said that he does it all wrong. He apparently puts a lot of strain on his vocal chords, the kind that does permanent damage. He really struggles anymore in falsetto, forcing him to not use is head voice, leading to even more strain.

Because of where I live i usually see DMB at the end of their summer tours at the Gorge. By N2 he's lost his upper range, by N3 the crowd is having to sing Ants for him.

In what way is Dave’s voice great these days? He struggles to keep up and even to sing in key.

Dave and Tim is good because it’s softer. Full band is pretty bad. Feel bad he has to sing at 50 mph and at level 10.

true, with their high level of income and modern advancements in medicine, this band could tour for probably a couple hundred more years.

Most of the time with the band he is pushing way too hard which throws everything off, alone or with Tim it is a different story. He still does a lot of things powerfully and beautifully on his own or with Tim with correct technique.

Narrowed down to two dates, April 27 or May 4, shoot me for trying , sorry Bruce if I boxed you into a corner, it was worth a shot tho, but I guess you couldn't just come out and say the date, otherwise you already would have

The thing I haven’t understood the last few years is why doesn’t he dial it back? Sure he may want to scream like a 70s rockstar, but if he can’t pull it off, it’s embarrassing.

He's dialed it back to a degree, especially on songs like DDTW and Ants. I like the way he sang Samurai Cop the first few performances, but he pushes his voice on it now.

Carter is definitely feeling it I believe. He's taped up a lot of shows now probably from his previous football injury.

He's completely gassed at shows. In 2016 you could look at his face and him being hunched over a lot and tell he needed a break.

I was backstage in Little Rock in 2016 which was what, the 4th or 5th show? And was told he was completely exhausted already.

Dude still absolutely destroys that kit though!

    Bruce,

Would you be surprised it the lead single's title started with the letter "A"? Depending on your answer, I may have up to 26 more follow up questions.

Interesting... I wonder what that 27th letter is?

Bruce, any idea? Is the alphabet changing?

I don't know, he sounded rough at St. Paul. But he sounded good at the C-ville, maybe it was just a temporary thing.
