Re: Who Do You Prefer for DMB: Roi or Jeff
I love Jeff Coffin.
Don't know how anyone could prefer him though. Outside of just being a great and unique player, Roi is at the center of song arrangements for the best of the band's catalog. Not a stretch to say much of what we know would be far, far less unique without him. I'm not a musician, but Roi's sense of what I'm assuming is considered countermelody or secondary melody (I think I've heard Dave talk about this) is pretty amazing. Roi and Steve Lillywhite gave the band so many "layers."
Preferring Jeff purely as a live player or a soloist would have merit, I personally like Roi's style better, but also Jeff can really play in a multitude of styles, he just often seems limited in his role within the band right now.
Now, should this band give Jeff more autonomy to take on some of that role? They sure should, no clue why they haven't. But when you listen to little Sirius soundbites where Jeff refers to Dave as his boss...I tend to think Jeff unfortunately doesn't have the pull he should.
