Biden and Yellen have both proactively talked about how we need to deficit spend on another stimulus...why even mention the deficit? They should be Ailey focused on the benefits of and need for another stimulus. Republicans would never mention the deficit and if asked would just say “this won’t add anything to the deficit...spending will be offset by tax revenue from bigger/faster economic growth.”

Dems instinctively get defensive and that hurts them.

To be fair, I just looked up the Yellen quotes and She was responding to a direct question in conf hearing...so her discussion of deficit was appropriate

Yeah, the Dems aren’t bringing this up on their own or having some self inflicted issue here.

But I think it’s important for them to effectively respond (which Yellen did) and not do the “deficits don’t matter” bit the GOP does. What they need to say is A) the risks of borrowing right now are very low due to favorable rate and capital environments, and B) the downside risk of not supporting the economy enough far outweighs the risks of “overdoing it” - where inflation really isn’t a concern and you’re not going to overheat an economy with this big of a hole in the labor market.

Yellen, as expected, had a great showing. I assume her confirmation will fly through without issue.

By the time it came on last night, my kids were already in bed. My 6 year old has been loving Perry's "Firework" lately, and when it came on last night, my wife and I were a little bummed out that he was missing it.

So this morning, the first thing we did after he woke up was find it on YouTube and watch it with him. Just as incredible this morning as it was last night. My favorite part was Doug Emhoff's blown-away reaction.

Just an amazing show last night. I hope that becomes the standard going forward. I love the idea of opening up inauguration day to the country as a whole, instead of having it be a series of private balls and concerts for people with money and political power.

The first jobless claims report in Biden's presidency is another bleak reminder of the depths the labor market is treading. 900K claims last week, down from prior week's 926K and below expectations of 935K. The improvement over prior and forecast is relatively insignificant - the jobless claims are still at historic levels (indeed, since the start of the pandemic, there have been zero weeks with a report below the prior all-time record high).

Another issue where the Biden Administration has its work cut out for them. Passage of a rescue package is still essential; the stop-gap relief passed in December will not suffice and will not be enough to reignite the economic recovery while the virus rages. Vaccines and stimulus are the path forward. I hope the new Democratic Congress hits the ground running. Extend and increase UI, supplement the EIP to $2,000 total, protect home owners and renters, and aid state and local governments and all the jobs and people they support. All while putting together the first comprehensive vaccine strategy and ramping up distribution and inoculation.

There's a lot of work to be done.
