Dave discusses writing new songs, wanting to record music w/ new DMB lineup soon

http://blog.siriusxm.com/hear-dave-m...d-run-channel/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ae8fFcKh9Y

"I'd love to get back in the studio. We always have a lot of music in the can, I've been writing as well. I'd like to get into the studio sometime soon with the band, I'd like to get into the studio with this whole... this new lineup. We are in a really great place.

We are coming up with a lot of fresh stuff. Fonz and Carter are always playing a lot of good stuff, there is so much there that we could do now. We should mine what we have as well - we have a lot of good stuff back there as well. It worked out well on Come Tomorrow. There's no reason not to go back and look at what you've made."

Nice to see that he wants to record new music but also revisit stuff that they haven't released, referencing the fact that he knows there is good unreleased stuff. Maybe some of the stuff in discussion for Come Tomorrow that didn't make it (Break Free, Shotgun, etc).

It wouldn't surprise me to see a new song or two pop out on tour this summer.

'this new lineup. We are in a really great place.'

Goodbye to any chance of a violin coming back.

Why the fuck did they have to put each question/answer in it's own youtube video? Just string it all together for fuck's sake!

Digging stuff out of the can to put on an album so you don't have to do as much work.

I'm all for them digging in cans, as long as the name on the lid isn't Batson.

Did they record Good Good Time and Sugar Will with Batson or another producer? Those are pretty solid songs.

they dug out two songs that have been drilled out since 2006.

black and blue bird onward i would have considered as CT sessions anyway, but i guess the point is fair

In addition to Idea of You and Can't Stop, CoCo was also recorded during the Batson Sessions, iirc.

is he aware that "the can" is a (somewhat outdated) euphemism for "the toilet"?

I mean there are good songs there but if they do what they did for CT and just basically put the old studio version on the new album, I'm not sure how good they'll sound.

If they want to rework them and scrub the Batson stain off them, that's cool. But that would be more work.

I’ll be honest, the last 4 albums have only made setlists worse. Except for AFTW, that’s had no impact at all.

The more new music we get, the fewer classics are played.

Given the 3 2006 songs chosen, and 1 being good, the practice of going to the can worked well for cutting down on his work, but this method isn't working for quality of material, which my original question posed of what worked well for CT was more geared toward this

You may have meant this in your statement but i'll broaden it by saying

"The more new music we get, the only classic DMB you get are the singles. Fan favorite deep tracks cease to exist on a setlist."

maybe it's another puzzle for us to solve, like the BWGGK album cover art in early 2009.

So are you saying that DMB should become a nostalgia act at this point in the band’s career?

Not a snipe at you. I’m just wondering how many fans wish they would stop making music now and just play all the old favorites.

Hopefully they put Bismarck on the next one and start it playing it again. I wonder if any more Batson Session songs get put on the next project. I'd love for a few to be on there.

    Bismarck
    Death On the High Seas
    Drive Me Away
    Ask
    Early Home

That is almost half an album right there. I think all those are solid and would be the makings of a good 4.0 debut album

Drive Me Away and Early Home are better than anything on CT if you ask me (maybe with the exception of IOY and VITR).

Not a snipe at you. I’m just wondering how many fans wish they would stop making music now and just play all the old favorites.
*raises hand*. I genuinely don't want another album from this band in it's current form. Now, if they added a violin, and used a producer (cough, Steve) who knew how to incorporate a violin, I would feel differently.

A Dave solo album on the other hand would be pretty great.

Not a nostalgia act, that would imply that they just play a bunch of crowd pleasers every night. I want them to dive deep into the catalog and experiment more with the setlists. It’s harder to do that on an album tour. Look at the liberation list, it’s getting pathetic.

I second this. I also still enjoy Come Tomorrow. I have a DMB-Family ish attitude where I'm just glad they are still motivated to keep playing.
