Best DMB studio album One-Two punch

Studio cut amendment I needed to make after adding the last line below. R2T is not your regular live album, but it has several studio cuts and some of the definitive versions of classic songs (at least for my ears).

I'm assuming a large percentage of folks here would select:

The Stone>Crush

Obviously amazing and arguably the champion, but...

My favorite of late is:

You Never Know>Captain...it's just phenomenal. Then it just keeps going.

Minarets>Seek Up is still hard to beat though...

    The Stone > Crush

Best two songs and starts the best 5 song run on any album:

    The Stone
    Crush
    The Dreaming Tree
    Pig
    Spoon

Since it won't be much of a discussion if everyone just lists songs out of the above 5 songs (even though that is the correct answer) I'll go

    #41>Say Goodbye

Now I'm just going to wait for someone to come in with ABI>AB

I agree with some of the ones already posted, but Big Eyed Fish --> Bartender is a pretty cool pair on Busted Stuff.

Same with Snow Outside --> Drunken Solider on Away From the World.

But I would still rank The Stone --> Crush --> Dreaming Tree --> Pig as the best run of songs on any DMB album.

Hell yes, though not over The Stone>Crush obviously.

Call me crazy but Can't Stop> Here On Out has a nice segue.

My serious answer is is Billies>Proudest Monkey. Outside choice I'm sure, but the insane energy of Billies stops dead before building up to a frenzy at the end of Proudest Monkey.

Have to agree with others as well about The Stone and Crush.

I can’t think of a bigger punch than Rapunzel > Last Stop. That moment when Last Stop kicks off is literally a punch to my face.

I originally had "excluding The Stone>Crush in the thread title, but I didn't want to force folks to other selections.

Right now YNK is probably my favorite song from the band and Captain has been a top tune since first hearing tLWS.

We spend far more time with the studio albums than the wealth of live recordings, so the sequences are ingrained...they might even be in our children's DNA.

My issue is that I love tLWS Captain way more than I love BS Captain. To me, BS Captain sounds like elevator music kind of. Captain live is crazy good and it should absolutely be played more.

We got it three times last year (Hartford, SPAC, MSG) and I was so happy to hear it each time. While it was spread out over 11 shows (which we aren't likely to do again), we got 10 tLWS/BS tunes between the summer and fall tours and it was awesome. YNK opening Capital One was awesome... It was a better show for us than C-ville N1.

I'll put in a mention about Halloween>The Stone. That string interlude coming out the operatic outro for Halloween right into The Stone is killer. Plus, well, its Halloween and The Stone.

This is how tours should be. That material is all so good.

I still feel like Monkey Man is a Top 5 wasted song for them. It had such a cool vibe to it and I feel like they could have really jammed it out at the end there. I wish I knew why it was axed.

I feel like they have at least 20 top 5 wasted songs though...

So much great stuff they don't play. I have no use for rarities, nothing good should be rare and more plays will never diminish a great song for me. I've already listened to various versions of most their tunes hundreds of times and I still love them. I'm not competing against other fans for having seen rare tunes at special venues. And now I'm going to stop ranting.

Monkey Man is an objectively bad song and bottom 10 in the catalog.

This is objectively an absolutely terrible take and the idea of it being "bottom 10" is hilarious. Nothing from those sessions is "bottom 10".

Most of Stand Up is already solidly occupying most of those spots anyway...

If you take away any two songs on BTCS, as that whole album just flows together into each song with the outros and intros, I'd say:

    Let You Down -> LIOG

Im not gonna use BTCS... it just isn’t fair.

Outside of that, my favorite one-twos are:

    #41 > Say Goodbye
    Minarets > Seek Up
    You Never Know > Captain

Oh, and by the way grilldanmo, I almost always agree on your musical takes. YNK is right at the tippy top for me as well.

It's very, very far from "the best" but I like BDKDNKBBFDK followed by Black and Blue Bird. I don't know why. It's just cool.

Monkey Man is the best example of an over hyped song on this site. Not sure why it gets so much love; because it's a LWS song? It's a shit song justifying why it's never been played live.

Not exactly sure why it would be over hyped. Roi is phenomenal on the track and lyrically it's better than anything on ct or aftw.

Yeah, I kind of feel like the lyrics on Monkey Man needed a little fine toning but we he had down was pretty brilliant. The visualization of us as evolving humans was really well done and the way he was working it between internal struggles just for survival and then the overall greed of people was awesome. It was going to be really strong lyrically.

Also, Carters work was just as good as Rois. Carters quiet drumming towards the end their in the background behind all of Rois floating notes was just awesome.
