Re: Dave’s IEM Recording Lambasting Pig/Fans

Someone threw a pig on stage in Houston. No Pig. Coincidence? (probably).

If this really is his attitude toward "hardcore" fans and playing what they want to hear, then it's safe to say that all the entitlement and belly aching about setlists that comes from that crowd is one reason we see a lot less variety on setlists these days. Out of spite.

It all fits right in with the stuff that came out in the vulture interview last year.

Dave got a pass by everyone during this time, in fact, I'd say 60% (or more) of the hardcores on nancies.org knew of this IEM and what he said about Pig.

If he would be caught on tape saying something similar about Dodo or [insert song] at Camden '19, everyone here would be roasting him calling him out of touch.

People were having conniptions and melts due to set lists throughout this year all the way till the Des Moines show, all of the Ants regulars/what's left would be calling Dave out of touch with his fans if the same IEM of this tour surfaced.

I don't know. I think that any musician who knows what the fans want to hear and doesn't play it just to fuck with fans is a dick.

Or by not playing it he's showing his well known dislike for signs at shows. If you bring a sign and block others' views you don't deserve to get "your" song played. You're not more special/important than others at the show despite your obvious indifference to others' experiences at that show. I don't see it as a bad thing that he said it.

Right. By playing suggestions on a sign gives the impression that it's "Ok" to bring signs to the show because DMB will play your song. By not playing the song it discourages people from doing it. Not only does it stop people from blocking another's view but won't get people's hopes up when they don't play "Spotlight".

(as an aside and to bring up Phish because that's what we do - Trey once said he likes signs but if you put up a sign during a song it's a sure fire way to NOT get your song played.)

There are few things in this world that I love more than DMB. Shit, there is not a single thing I have spent more money on my life than DMB. I have been seeing them since 1995 and I literally have listened to them everyday for over 20 years. However, I can admit that Dave has turned into a dick over the years, that he is out of touch, and honestly has the worst taste in his own music. And that sucks, it really, really sucks. But it's also his prerogative.

My point had nothing to do with signs. I understood the pig thing because of the signs. But I don't think people are bringing Dodo signs, so if an IEM surfaced of him shitting on a song fans were chanting for and saying "nah fuck 'em", that's a dick move. Signs aren't even allowed any longer, are they?

I am not personally sure whether any of the band members are known to drink before concerts, but my guess was that it happened sometimes!

I don't mean that he would have to be totally schwaysted as much as, if he had just enough to drink, going on this quirky tangent would have happened like it was second nature!!

moreso than education, food, housing, cars, insurance?

or are you talking solely about entertainment and the costs associated with going to shows + music and merchandise?

This is a 2001 show so maybe that is an OK bet. If this was 94-97 I'd take your money...

Dave in one era of the band would get drunk before stepping on stage? Jesus. Never heard that one.

I completely agree blocking someone's view with a sign is pretty shitty but I don't think that was the reasoning. Dave for the most part doesn't care what people want to hear, let alone worry about the six people that can't see because a sign is blocking the view. The pig thing, especially the Chicago show, was Dave just being petty.

What happened at this performance? Just checked it out on the Almanac. First time Raven was played since 95. I had no idea that an early version of Raven was played in 95. Also JTR debut. Heck of a show.

The show you are referring to was the show before. They both had great sets, but check out the next show.
I haven't listened to the show in awhile but from what I remember Dave gets angry because of the signs and reads them to Carter, they go on for a few. I believe he says something along the lines of "pig, shit, I must be a damn fool". Carter asks "should we go into it" and Dave responds with "(...go ahead.) I got a microphone fuck em." I don't remember what is played next.
At the end, Dave says in a munchkin voice, it was a joke they had going on throughout the show, "let's too much these motherfuckers and leave this motherfucker". I'm sure that's just stage banter, but the more I hear Dave speak about his fans and construct setlists, the more I kinda wonder.

Dave seems like he can be kind of a dick and this isn't the first time I've heard of him acting like one. I doubt this had anything to do with signs, instead, his rich ass was pissed that fans wanted to hear the good tunes instead of crap off of Everyday.
