I dunno, assuming the lawn mower was on his property, it was out of line for the person to assume it was junk and take it without permission. If it was on the curb, then yeah. However, it's also not smart to leave something like that unsecured...that's just asking for trouble.

yeah that's why I did add the caveat of "depending on the layout." if it's one of those garages that basically abuts the curb, or has a driveway of maybe like 10 feet, I can see why someone driving around curb hunting for a few days and saw it not moving over those days might think it was junk

It was right against my garage door. Standard driveway so a good 10 yards from the street. I feel if they noticed it for a couple days, all the more reason to ask “hey you throwing that out? Looking to get rid of it?”

I will say though: have you ever actually interacted with one of the junk people? I'd say that if you were going to give it to them upon their asking anyway, I'd consider it a victory that they just took it instead of having to have that interaction with them at all. the junk people are very very strange.

Yeah, but if the person asked you, there's a chance you could say no. That chance is eliminated if it is just stolen.

My good friend is a garbage picker. He's not in the least strange (I mean, aside from the whole garbage picking). It's not because he needs the junk or $ (I mean, he has a summer house on Martha's Vineyard). He just likes to see what he can find. He's out every night, then lists the shit he finds on craigslist. His garage is just full of his garbage picking finds.

The lady that goes through my neighborhood (you can hear her car a mile away), now she's a strange one that you wouldn't want to interact with.

Both valid points, junk people arent exactly social creatures. As I said, not too irritated it’s gone so much as someone stole it broad daylight. Part of me is relieved I don’t have to mess with it now.

Our local landfill has an area where you can drop off items that you don't want, but aren't quite trash. There are lurkers there that will swarm you as you pull in, and start grabbing stuff from your car as soon as you open the doors.
