1000% agree. I only want Lillywhite producing an album with those. AFTW was so much closer to what this band should sound like. I don't need hardcore rock from them.

My greatest fear is that they think most people feel this way. They will deliver a Big Whiskey Part 2 instead of progressing in the direction Away From The World has taken. What a shame.

I would prefer it to an Away from the World 2.0 though.

I'd like to see them just put out a new album. No 2.0s

To me, AFTW was an attempt to rediscover their old sound with Steve that came up short. When I first heard Broken Things, I thought it was incredible. But the only songs after that one that clicked were BBN and Snow Outside. Just feels incomplete and a bit flat to me.

Big Whiskey is a stronger group effort and really got me back into the band after a couple years of not knowing what to expect out of them. Carter sounds great and it's a powerful group of songs IMO.

I will say I wish there was more of a Boyd presence on BW. That is something that Steve was able to accomplish on AFTW. Hopefully Cavallo will be patient with Boyd this time around.

LITHOG for me, and that's it. The rest is poopie.

Does Beach Ball count? If so, that too.

IMO, AFTW has much better songwriting then Big Whiskey, minus Dave's awkward/redundant chorus lyrics. The only thing on BW that stands up to anything on AFTW is LITHOG, Sweet is really the only "bad" song on the album. AFTW also has some of Dave's best riffs since the big 3 era.

It's basically this for me too. Not that I hate AFTW, but Big Whiskey felt like a stronger record and I just enjoy the way it was produced more than the way Away from the World came out. Just a matter of opinion I suppose

Dave is a million miles from the life he had when he wrote the lyrics we all love but I do think people who have shown that they have a strength in a certain area are capable of getting back to showing their talent in that area again, it isn't a sport where once you lose your ability you are incapable of getting back to what you once were. Interesting that they are apparently at Haunted Hollow!
The quality of the lyrics on AFTW is a matter of opinion not fact. Broken things and Drunken Soldier are fantastic. As is the rest of the album. The worst thing about AntsMarching.org is the "group think". For a band that embraces open thought processes they have a very close minded hard core fan base.

My only issue with these posts is that it seems, like many other posts, to assume that we all feel the same way about the current state of the band.

This. Sadly, those that represent "the minority opinion" are labeled such and are quickly trolled/flamed. If you aren't posting to say how much you hate corbread, everyday and stand up, the same twenty people jump into the thread and attack.

moreover, this is pretty common on the internet in my experience.

It's reasons stated above that keep me away from posting here, and many other places. If it weren't for the once-a-year good post about album information, i'd probably never come back here.

Cavallo has already started the Sugar Will treatment (maybe they were demo-ing it at the time though)... anyone remember the video where Dave is tracking in Las Vegas & then showing the lithographs / BWWGK album package to Cavallo?

It's seek up type music... But the lyrics are no where near great. Music is fantastic absolutely; nailed it on the studio cut especially with Boyd. I wonder how Roi would have been on this.

I enjoy the lyrics from Drunken Soldier. I get where Dave is coming from as a father and I don't think the song would relate as well if he had used eccentric or complicated lyrics.
