Take care of your cars, do the proper maintenance, and with a little luck that doesn't have to be the case.
These comments made generally speaking about leases. Your post only reminded me of my thoughts on the subject.

We leased her Edge back in '07 cause we had just bought this house. She was pregnant with number 2 so she needed a bigger car for the 2 car seats, double stroller, etc. Plus, she had an ultima and it was not good in the bad weather and new house is not in a flat area. We didn't have the money to make a down payment and/or make the payment reasonable so we leased that car.
Last year, we wanted to buy and intended to do so. My dad, who sells Fords, convinced me otherwise. He advised I go with the short lease and then buy the car when the lease is up. Based the dollar difference between buying and leasing last year and what the price will be when the lease is up, he felt we should wait and buy it when lease is up. We'd have a lot more in our pockets for the next few years. She only puts like 5-6K a year driving around town and the car will have low miles with the lower price to buy it when the lease is up and will be close to brand new. He thought it was the best way to go. He felt pretty strong about it.
Hope my car lasts forever. Been paid for for about 5 years now and it will suck when I have to replace it. T
