Just listened to a few of the Batson Session tracks again, and man... there are some *GREAT* song sketches there, just needing Dave to flesh out the vocals and apply some production polish. I forgot how good some of them were.

I was just leaving college, the first time around. And it seemed like everybody that I listened to in the 90's was failing me, putting out half-hearted uninteresting records. I couldn't stand the sterile simplicity of most of Everyday, it was just the most un-DMB thing I'd ever heard from them. I still don't revisit it. Back then, I got my hands on the LWS when they leaked, and while it provided some comfort, it was also claustrophobically dark, and some of the lyrics were unfinished. Busted Stuff was an uneven revisitation (I'll never forgive what they did to Captain, and WAYG is still dreadfully boring). So when I heard Stand Up was coming, I got excited, and was yet again let down--one or two track notwithstanding. Those were just some really bad years for being a DMB fan.


They've made some good music since then, but not one album since BTCS has been at the level where I didn't feel compelled to miss a track or two.

I've been out of the game for a while and am barely getting back into DMB. So my timeline might be off here.

Years later, I actually like some of the songs off of Everyday. However - there are no songs I like off of Stand Up. I can maybe tolerate some songs - and appreciate that the songs are a part of the DMB story - but that is the only reason I listen to them. I don't pretend to understand why Crazy Easy or Joy Ride were scrapped. Maybe they just aren't good studio songs. Maybe they sound too much like old DMB and they wanted to try something new. Either way, what started with scrapping the Lillywhite sessions began a trend of confusing swings and misses for the band (for me as a fan).

That being said - you can see they are still capable of making solid songs. That's why I loiter. Hoping they can recapture some of the magic I used to find incomparable and exciting.

I like a lot of the songs on SU and they work live better than most songs from more recent albums in my opinion, that being said the album itself is the worst album they've done. It would've been nice if they had kept the '04 songs for what became SU but I personally don't listen to albums after the first week or two, glad they've kept playing some of them.

All of this brings up an interesting question: when does a song actually become the song? Fonzi might have riffed Red Glare back then, but was it actually "Red Glare" or just a riff Fonzi liked with no plans for it? Raven may be based on a TS intro from '95, but it didn't evolve into anything resembling Raven until years later. It seems like an oversimplification to push those dates back that far with some of these.

Good question. But that riff did become something, so who knows. Raven seemed like a pretty set idea

It's the only song off of Crash that I haven't seen and my favorite off of the album...definitely criminally underrated

I am one of those who likes #36. I like the groove. I even loved the lovely ladies and what they did to songs like #36. I like the history #36 carries. I like that phase of DMB. I do not like how #36 became Everyday. That is - I do not like Everyday as a song. Crazy how I work like that.
