He practiced with the team today. Niskanen skated on his own before practice. Bylsma said the line-up will be a game time decision. I would think that means a decision between Lovejoy and Strait.

Lovejoy is an unfortunate hockey name. Almost as bad as Clutterbuck.

Oh yeah. I understand the idea of Burke though, as I've said 100 times. He though Kessel would get them into the playoffs. They were only like 10 points out in 09 and adding Kessel with not giving up any roster pieces would push them in. The two first rounders don't look as bad if you're in the playoffs. However....lol they went from 12th in the East in 09 to 15th in the East in 2010 and had less points. lol It was a risk that backfired times 1000 for the Leafs.
My thoughts back when the Kessel trade happened and the response from a poor Leafs fan.

I know a ref with the last name "DICK". The junior league he refs in now, they were name plates. He hears about it here and there.

That is most unfortunate. One of the things I love most about hockey players... greatest trash talkers ever. It's like an inherent hockey trait. The guys who don't know or learn how to trash talk generally don't make it past pee wees.

So I have to say I'm not sure what you would consider first words cause Griffin was saying dadadada a while ago but now I can get him to say hockey. It's pretty awesome.

That's a fact. The trash talking I did as a player gives me good, fast, witty replies as a ref now...
Coach: Why wasn't that a penalty?
Me: Because I didn't put my arm up and blow the whistle.
    Coach: .....what?

I can always tell in adult league the guys that didn't play growing up because they pull out things like "You're ugly." and "You probably have a shitty job!".

Or they get all offended when someone trash talks to them and complains to you. Those are some of the best. My favorite response is to look them right in the eye and simply say, "you're kidding, right?" You definitely have to have the sense of humor to go along with a thick skin when you're reffing hockey

    why thank you.

I am interested to see how penalties are going to be called. Especially in my series which promises to be low scoring. The game between the Wings and Devils had a grand total 3 penalties the whole game and there was a lot of crap let go. Game against the Hawks had 3 by the 22 minute mark. They need to find a way to get this more consistent.

My favorite when reffing is when 2 guys are talking shit and waiting for me to step in to separate them...but I just stand there and wait for them to fight. They both look at me like "Come on....I don't wanna fight....".

I think it's hilarious when coaches and fans yell at me, especially when they don't know the rules. Or know the NHL rules but not the USA Hockey rules thinking it's the same rule. I've asked coaches plenty of times to come to my locker room after games and review the USA Hockey rules with me after the game. None have ever taken me up on the offer.

John Buccigross has been very critical of the refs slowly letting obstruction back into the game on twitter, even with a DVR pause/cell picture to prove his point a few times.

Gotta prep 'em for the Ants junior hockey league with Tim's boy and Kev's new arrival.

Good for you man. I too have never been taken up on the offer, but I have gone into a team's dressing room after a game with the rule book... which is usually not a very good idea because the team is still amped up from the game and it's like jumping into a den of lions .

And he's right I think. Someone threw out a stat of how many fewer power plays there are now compared to the first year following the lockout and it's way down.

Yeah, well that should have changed recently since the league stressed to the officiating director that they should really crack down on "Too Many Men" calls.

Yea, I'll pass on going into the rooms.

    What levels do you ref?

I also agree with him but I don't think that stat exactly proves it. It took a while for some players (Example: Gonchar) to adjust to the new standard of play.

On the other hand, over time, players also get better at getting as close to that lines as possible without going over it.

Yeah, I think we've discussed in here before how the standards have slowly devolved back towards those of the clutch and grab era. It's not TERRIBLE yet, but it's one of those things that needs to be addressed soon because with the direction it's going it will be back to where it was within a few seasons.

Anywhere from Mites up to high school, men's league, and local university games. We've got a pretty severe shortage of refs here in Utah, so you get a good range of exposure to all levels once you hit your certifications.

Also got the opportunity to be a linesman at a couple ECHL games this year for our local team. Man, those kids are little dicks...

    You?

And I agree about players playing close to the line. That's the natural tendency, and hockey players are smart. They're going to go as close to the line without going over it. Eventually the line starts moving slowly... until we're clutching and grabbing.

    Very nice!

I only started taking reffing serious 2 seasons ago (I'm 32 now) after coaching HS and PeeWee's for 6 years after college. I only did about 6 adult league games since Sept, which is just fine with me, ha. I mainly do the school league (middle school, JV, and HS games) but do a few travel games on the weekends. I like to keep my weekends to myself so I rarely do any travel games. Due to my brother's ACHA coaching involvement, I have avoided doing those games but I might start to do some this year...but those are weekends also, as I'm sure you know. I like my weekends! Overall, I did around 65 games this season.

I have also cut down pretty significantly on how many I do since the kids were born, but I grab a few every here and there. Like you said, the evening ones during the week (translation: men's league) are preferred! The money's not fantastic, but considering the hours worked it's not a bad on-the-side job.

I'm training him up to be a goalie. Only one way to learn.
