Bill Murray Appreciation (& Favorite Comedy Role)

I really so wanted to be able to include Garfield in this, but oh well, only 10 options.

So this is inspired by not simply that Bill Murray is one of my favorite human beings, I really do consider him the greatest comic actor of all time, but more specifically because I just heard about and watched last night this fairly rare interview he did for Charlie Rose.

http://www.uproxx.com/tv/2014/02/bil...-charlie-rose/

The thing's about a good full hour long. It's pretty funny what he'd had on his mind to say if he'd won the oscar back on Lost In Translation. and you can see him I think come right to the brink of getting a little emotional when he talks about Belushi's death near the end.

Anyway as far as the poll that I decided to include in this appreciation thread, it's not necessarily just your favorite movie out of these, but which contained the Murray performance you loved the most. and btw, I left LIT out because these are all the more straight up comedic roles, if you saw that movie you know that's much more in the "dramedy" arena than these others.

I think Peter Venkman is a better character than Carl Speckler but I chose Caddyshack because it's the greatest movie ever made.

Tough between Venkman and Phil the weatherman, but I went with Phil BC that movie is 100% his role.

As much as I love Spackler and Venkman, my vote EASILY goes to Ernie McCracken in Kingpin. It was a supporting role, but I think it's his funniest performance ever, he absolutely steals every single scene he appears in and almost every line out of his mouth is just devastatingly funny.

Funnily enough, I read an interview with him in Playboy some years back and they asked him if there were any roles that he regretted taking, and he named Kingpin. He didn't say he actually regretted doing it, but he said somethng along the lines of it being too racy/inappropriate.

okay I wasn't even sure what that question about "the chive" even meant at first

but, I can tell you that I considered Bill Murray practically a religion WELL before I ever even heard the word 'hipster', easily more than 20 years. So if somebody wants to roll their eyes at it or something that's their issue.

I actually choose Big Earn as well. The one liners in that movie by the character and the way Bill delivers them are amazing. "If I get drunk enough and fall down, I just might loose." "Big Earn is finally above the law!" "That chick is a stone faced liar, I pulled out really early on that one!"

But knowing most of his lines were improvised as Carl Spangler in Caddyshack which have become golf standards really deserves note. "Jump ship out of Hong Kong, makes his way over to Tibet." "Cinderella Boy" the list goes on.

I have always heard mixed reviews on Mr. Murray while on set, but I have also heard great things about him as a regular guy as well.

    Funny man regardless.

It's a shame really, because Bill was the PERFECT cast for Garfield. I think the movie was actually cast really well... it was just scripted like shit.

well you particularly get this sense if you watch this Charlie Rose interview, Murray seems to be much less concerned anymore with being such the aloof, reclusive sort of guy he was in the past. It's even apparently a lot easier and more conventional to get a hold of him for work these days, whereas everyone always talked about that random like 800 number you'd have to call and maybe he'd check it once a month.

dude! okay opinions are opinions, but this is just plain wrong I can't fathom how someone who is a Bill Murray fan wouldn't like Scrooged. I'm not saying it's his best work, but it fits in very nicely with the rest of his resume.

Tough, tough choice between Caddyschack, Stripes, Groundhog Day and What About Bob.

Chose What About Bob because he is so annoying that sometimes you want to slap him, but its hilarious and you still like him throughout it, which sums Murray up perfectly to me.

Got to pick Phil Connors. It's probably both my favorite role as well being my favorite movie of his. I love Bill Murray in general, but Groundhog Day is the movie that I always think of when I think of Bill Murray.

I'd go with Veckman by a hair over Carl. He's never really bad in anything.

    Loved his cameo in Zombieland.
