The Sopranos Prequel Film - The Many Saints of Newark - Written by David Chase

‘The Sopranos’ Prequel Film Confirmed: David Chase’s ‘The Many Saints Of Newark’ Takes Shape at New Line
by Zack Sharf - March 8, 2018

New Line has officially purchased Lawrence Konner and David Chase's screenplay for their 1960s-set "Sopranos" prequel.

David Chase is officially returning to the world of “The Sopranos.” Deadline confirms Chase and Lawrence Konner’s screenplay for their “Sopranos” prequel film has been purchased by New Line. The working title for the prequel is “The Many Saints of Newark.” Chase created the HBO series, which ran for six seasons, and Konner served as a writer.

“The Many Saints of Newark” is set during the 1960s riots in the New Jersey city between the African-American and Italian communities. The war between the cultural mobs turns especially lethal. According to Deadline, the prequel film will include characters that appeared on the HBO series, most likely younger versions of Tony Soprano’s father and mother, played in the original series in flashback by Joseph Siravo and Nancy Marchand. Tony’s uncle Junior is also expected to appear.

Chase will serve as producer in addition to co-writer. He’ll also be involved in choosing the director to helm the film.

“David is a masterful storyteller and we, along with our colleagues at HBO, are thrilled that he has decided to revisit, and enlarge, the Soprano universe in a feature film,” said Noah Emmerich, Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman. Warner Bros. is the parent company of New Line.

“The Sopranos” has been off the air since 2007’s infamous series finale cut to black. The show is often cited as one of the best television dramas in history.
This needed its own thread. Amazing news!

I'm not sure if I'm more excited for the film or the potentially amazing soundtrack. Chase and Van Zandt were masters at picking music for the series.

If they do any nod to the series I hope it's the scene where Johnny Boy shot Livias beehive hair.

I imagine it will take place when he’s a boy so it will likely be a different actor anyway.

Also, my b. I guess I didn’t pick up that he was joking. I just assumed he thought maybe they’d cast a version of Tony right before the lead up to when the show starts.

It would be a very bad idea to put anybody else in Gandolfini’s shoes as it comes to adult Tony.

There's just no way they'll do flash forwards in a movie setting...perhaps if it was a new show with no set run of episodes, but for a movie? This is surely going to stick to the time period.

If it is well written, with some good violence, will probably be a solid movie.

He's like a legit weirdo IRL - I think he's buddhist or something. It's just so odd to see him out of that character as a real person because it's such a 180.

Can they please kill Carmela Soprano in the prequel so we can rewatch the original series without her and Tony will finally have some peace?

I may have to plan on rewatching the whole series leading up to the release of the movie. Been something I've been meaning to do for a while, but haven't just because there is so much else out there to watch. This definitely gives the needed incentive to finally do it.

I am so stoked about this movie and about Michael playing Tony, I wish they would have kept the Many Saints of Newark title though, it had such a Sopranos-esque feel to it. It’s gonna be a long year and a half and damn if I’m not excited about this!!!
