Someone tweeted to fonz asking if there was any truth to the rumors av bout going back to the studio in January. Fonz replied "well that was one of my surprises. But do you know who the producer is? I do!!!"

Butch Vig (Nevermind) and Dave Grohl got back together and made a great record, let's hope the same is true for Lillywhite and DMB.

Hey guys so I tweeted Stefan about the studio sessions and he was the one that tweeted me back.

    My twitter is @nickbourne

Feel a bit honored he would reply that to me. His response asked who was the producer? Thoughts

I wouldn't actually be that surprised to see this happen, a lot of time has passed and Lillywhite has seemed open to the idea of working with them again. Iirc they were at least flirting with the idea of a reunion for Big Whiskey. While expectations will obviously be ridiculous if this is true, I feel pretty confident that they would deliver at the very least a really solid record together

Lillywhite is producing DMB next album. His twitter is sure making it seem that way at least.

Can't believe no one has mentioned this tweet from Fonz!
@Somedevil40Sox did he play the 3rd verse?

We all know Fonz wants to play all the stuff the hardcore fans want.

I was going to comment on some earlier posts, but then once I found all this Lillywhite rumor/twitter info I decided to scrap my criticism.

This could be insane! When reading their twitters, I could barely stay in my seat.

My balls will be so blue if all of this is not true.

    This has to be true.
Sillywhite and Slessard both posted "hung out with some old friends tonight. . ." and "@sillywhite you should follow me. . ." two hours ago. Did Lillywhite really attend the NY show?

ok so i was fairly disappointed after tonight's show but i'm absolutely insanely excited now. i'd fear we're putting too much faith in a producer except look at his four albums. wow. this is the most excited i've been about the band in probably 10 years.

So for people who think expectations are too high if it's lillywhite: First, he's produced four albums for DMB. I don't think there's more than a couple people here who would argue with the fact that these are DMB's (by far) four best albums. Second and probably more importantly, if they've chosen to go back with him, they're making a conscious statement that they want to get back to what they had with him. This is huge, particularly after a relatively successful (among fans) album in BW. They've never before admitted that they miss what he brings and the sound they had. The act of hiring would say so much (all positive) about the band's mindset.

I did... Was just offering up my similar opinion. Of course shortly thereafter I read the confirmation that lillywhite was at the show and now give mor credit to the rumors

I can't buy it at this point. I just refuse to let myself buy into it to have my hopes crushed.

I really hope that previous post didn't come off as too dickish because I do consider you to be one of the better posters on this board.

Agreed... But more goes into an album than just the production. It's been said that during the writing of the big 3 that Dave was going through more emotional times in his life, thus the deep, haunting, introspective lyrics and mood of the music. There has been some criticism that since his adult life has settled into a happy marriage and family that his songwriting became generic. Again, all opinion (not necessarily mine). However, lillywhite might be the perfect guy to help Dave's writing even if the material isn't the dark stuff a la LWS.

Fuck the expectations reasoning. Until it is proven otherwise, I will be of the opinion that Lillywhite drives greatness out of this band. He is a perfectionist.

Not at all, bro. I'm with you. I've been condemning the rumor mill for years so I'll wait for an official announcement. But it is hard to ignore all the info lining up.
Part of me wants it to be a dirty trick on fonz's part just to watch these boards collapse in on themselves. Call me a cynic!

Thats my thought. There is still greatness in him. I just don't see Lillywhite allowing some of the sloppy songwriting (lyrically) that occurred on BW to occur.

It just seems to add up too much. I can't believe it though. Not until I have the album in my hand with Lillywhite's name as the producer.

No denying that. But I wonder to what level he expects bands he works with to strive for. I listened to him talk about the studio process for BTCS and was interested to hear how intensely he pushed Boyd to really make the violin parts speak and how many hours he spent fine tuning lyrics and such with Dave. Then I listen to something like the Exile On Mainstream release from Matchbox 20 which was produced by Lillywhite and don't hear too much musical genius. I hear some unique things that you know he suggested be put there to compliment the music. But it still sounds like expected Matchbox 20.

Then again... It's Matchbox 20, whom I enjoy, but would never group with DMB

Thats a fair point. In being honest, I've just assumed the perfectionist aspect is still there. He might have mellowed a little since then. I honestly hope thats not the case. I don't want a song like Shake Me when you have something as fantastic as Squirm. That both were wrote by the same man during the same period of time is kind of crazy (at least lyrically). We shall see.

I can't see a guy doing what lillywhite does become less of a perfectionist. Especially given his history with the band and his knowledge that the fans WANT that level of music.
I would be curious as to how he fits Ross and jeff into the mix. I think if he can pull the creative part of jeff that sties more orchestrated music out (a la his work with bela) coupled with ross's ability to piece together music, it could be fantastic. I'd love to hear what Jeff could create if he limits himself to flute for a few sessions as well. Or bust out that clarinet!

The possibilites are limitless. I feel like he could do great things with the horn section. But he definitely is aware of what the fans want. He is even beyond critical of the albums hes done with the band previously (which the flaws he finds are minimal compared to some of the abortions on Everyday/Stand Up).

If this does come to fruition, (and please no one turn this into another dumb Roi vs Jeff conversation) its just sad that Roi isn't around to partake. Its been well documented how big of a role Roi played in the creative process for the band.
